Atlantic City, New Jersey: Casinos and Carnival Rides Lining Historical Beachside Boardwalk

No trip to Atlantic City is complete without a stroll along its signature boardwalk, which stretches for 6 miles along New Jersey's eastern coast. Originally built in 1870 to keep sand out of hotel lobbies, the boardwalk grew in popularity as a place where you could drink and gamble during Prohibition without much trouble from the police, as depicted in HBO's Boardwalk Empire. The boardwalk is still popular for its casinos, but it's family-friendly, too; visitors are just as inclined to sit at the beach or stop at one of the many carnival rides.

On the boardwalk, it's worth it to check out the Absecon Lighthouse, which is more than 150 years old. It's possible to climb its 228 steps to the top, which features sweeping views of the city skyline and the sea.

Disaster, don't do it I stayed at the Showboat because I got a discounted group rate through the event my son was a part of. I will not make the mistake of accepting that discount again. I never received a confirmation email of my reservation, found out 2 days before that my reservation was wrong and I was missing a day. Called 6 times to correct this issue, never got an actual person on the phone, but luckily received a response to the voicemail I was finally able to leave. I was told the day before arrival that everything was corrected. It wasn't. At check-in, my reservation was still inaccurate and now they had no manager there at the time to help. I was told the manager would call me the next day, but I chose the approach the front desk as I was already downstairs. The manager still didn't know what was going on; I had to explain the situation again, and he assured me he would take care of the issue. The manager, Ryan, was great. It doesn't stop there, though. Only 3 elevators were working, and most of the buttons didn't work, so you never knew if you were going to make it. At one point, a photographer waited 30 minutes to go downstairs with his equipment. At one point he tried to call the front desk from the elevator vestibule, but he couldn't get a human on the phone. People were taking elevators going up to get downstairs. My friend and I chose to walk down 12 flights of stairs twice when we couldn't get in several elevators. Additionally, there were several leaks in different places, and had to go through construction to get to the lobby level when taking the stairs. The restaurant options were almost nonexistent, and we went to a different hotel for most of our meals. We also ordered delivery at one point, but couldn't get an elevator back up to our room to eat, there was nowhere available for seating, so we found a random deserted location (close to the construction near the abandoned former buffet) to stand and eat our meal before the show. Now let's talk about my room. It was a sauna stuck at 80⁰ and above. I turned the air conditioner down to 64⁰, turned it off completely, nothing worked. Attempted the front desk again, no one answered. We had one half-used roll of toilet paper with no backup roll. I had to ask my friend for her extra roll because, when we actually saw housekeeping and asked, they advised they don't supply it. Also, what hotel doesnt supply hair dryers in their rooms? And forget calling the front desk for one. They won't answer. My friend ended up going to another hotel's salon just ask them to blow dry her hair. Lastly, water. There is none without payment. Ice machines? Only found one that worked, and we had to take an elevator to the 14th floor to get it. Why? We went to the gym while we were there, had nowhere to refill our water bottles, though I did attempt to fill my bottle with ice to let it melt in my sauna, I mean room, but it didn't work well in my insulated water bottle, but that's on me because of my bottle's insulation. Again, we got our water rations at a different hotel. For free. Showers? You have 6+ foot models staying with you, but at 5'4" I was nearly being poked in the face by the shower head. Make it make sense. I am making recommendations to the group I was with that they choose a different venue to host their several-day long event going forward. Even the staff knew the hotel was below par based on their comments.

Shining Example of a Dying Hotel This bombed out shell of a hotel/casino needs to just die let somebody else make it great. No stairs. Stairs? why do you ask? That's because there are a total of six elevators but they only have three working. Everybody complained about this but the hotel just keeps on gaslighting us like this a new issue. This creates a massive backlog of people trying to get up to their rooms in the evening and go down in the morning. The hallway carpet is all stained and hasn't been vacuumed since 1982. Every table in the room was all wobbly even the mini fridge in the cabinet was missing a foot. The TV screen was more blue than the Blue Man Group. That happens when the LED TV needs new LEDS. Horrible picture. No coffee maker. Did not find a hair dryer. Value? $170 a night is a bit much. The walls shake when your neighbor leaves their room and the door slams shut. Can hear a mouse fart from the hallway...oh sorry, that was some person that night. I forgot to mention the individual with an ankle monitor going around with the cleaning staff into the rooms. Probably not the best look. Only stayed here because it was the venue for our event. If we come again, we'll stay next door. Look at all the other reviews, they all say same thing, over and over again.

Fun trip despite the flaws, don't bother with the waterpark unless your kids are 42" or taller We had a fun few days at Showboat including the waterpark despite some significant flaws. Positives: Friendly staff! Clean, comfortable rooms (especially for the price point) Fun arcade and go-karts, clean and modern water park with attentive lifeguards, good quick service food options and drinks inside water park, adult-only area with swim-up bar was great. Negatives: The elevators in Bourbon tower are in desperate need of modernization, only 4 out of 6 main elevators seemed to be in operation at any given time. There were HUGE waits for elevators (lines of 50+ people) during peak times, and even during off-peak the elevators were slow to arrive. Water park: Clean, modern facility that's nicely designed with some flaws that could be fixed. Basically, If you have kids under 42" tall that love waterslides, don't bother. Their "Kids cove" is severely lacking (one tiny slide and not much else) compared to indoor waterpark competition such as Kartrite or Great Wolf Lodge, not to mention Morey's Piers waterpark in Wildwood (outdoor) ALL of these other parks have larger kids areas as well as shorter height requirements for water slides that are the same scale as the smaller "Slide Island" slides at Showboat. Showboat's 42" height requirement for these modest slides smacks of insurance requirements not rider safety, even vs. other NJ waterparks such as Morey's Piers. To sum it up, we had a really fun trip with family and friends despite some real flaws with Showboat.
