Atlantic City, New Jersey: Casinos and Carnival Rides Lining Historical Beachside Boardwalk

No trip to Atlantic City is complete without a stroll along its signature boardwalk, which stretches for 6 miles along New Jersey's eastern coast. Originally built in 1870 to keep sand out of hotel lobbies, the boardwalk grew in popularity as a place where you could drink and gamble during Prohibition without much trouble from the police, as depicted in HBO's Boardwalk Empire. The boardwalk is still popular for its casinos, but it's family-friendly, too; visitors are just as inclined to sit at the beach or stop at one of the many carnival rides.

On the boardwalk, it's worth it to check out the Absecon Lighthouse, which is more than 150 years old. It's possible to climb its 228 steps to the top, which features sweeping views of the city skyline and the sea.

Not the relaxation resort we expected. Hotel rooms need to be upgraded. The beds had squeaky springs and the mattress had an old floral print. There was no standard mattress cover or fitted sheets and the pillows were below the standard size….more like a baby pillow. Dust on the headboard had us all sneezing and needed allergy medicine. Barely slept and couldn’t wait to get up to leave. Insufficient outlets and charging ports in the rooms. We had to ask for wash cloths. No answer when we called the front desk or housekeeping. No luggage carts available. Stains on the rugs in the hallways was unacceptable. Many of the arcade games didn’t work and just took the kids money. Lack of security as there were loud young men in the lobby just hanging out. Water park leaves a lot to be desired. There could be more attractions. Hotel needs to big upgrade overall.

One night was enough Chose to stay at this hotel for the one night we were in A/C because of location convenience due to our first choice being completely booked. Knew this was a child friendly hotel but did not realize it was an entirely pet friendly hotel, which is a great for those traveling with pets, but since was not with a pet we had hoped the room we were staying in was clean. (Thought if not with a pet, would be offered a room not utilized for pets) So...the room was relatively clean but there were obvious stains on the carpet and some on the couch (not too visible), thankfully though there were no odd smells and the bed was clean. No soap dish for the hand soap which was unsightly laying on the sink counter, and no washcloths. We can see why this hotel would be a destination for families with children, due to the many activities, arcades, child friendly restaurants, etc...even saw mini golf and a roller-skating rink. Security was visible which was reassuring, the valet was friendly and professional so felt confident the vehicle was in good hands. She also gave clear instructions for how to retrieve our car. The hotel seemed organized at the front desk check in/check out process. We have since never received an email receipt, which is unusual, since the front desk confirmed the email address with an explanation of the digital correspondence.

Showboat Atlantic City Hotel is a nice place to stay and if you have kids they will enjoy it. Showboat Atlantic City Hotel is a nice place to stay and if you have kids they will enjoy it. The place is a bit dated and in need of maintenance and repairs torn carpet, ripped curtains and wood trim broken off the wall. This can also be seen when you come in, front desk, hallways and elevators need attention. On the plus side Security on the property is very good and friendly you'll feel safe. Would I stay there again, probably would..
