Atlantic City, New Jersey: Casinos and Carnival Rides Lining Historical Beachside Boardwalk

No trip to Atlantic City is complete without a stroll along its signature boardwalk, which stretches for 6 miles along New Jersey's eastern coast. Originally built in 1870 to keep sand out of hotel lobbies, the boardwalk grew in popularity as a place where you could drink and gamble during Prohibition without much trouble from the police, as depicted in HBO's Boardwalk Empire. The boardwalk is still popular for its casinos, but it's family-friendly, too; visitors are just as inclined to sit at the beach or stop at one of the many carnival rides.

On the boardwalk, it's worth it to check out the Absecon Lighthouse, which is more than 150 years old. It's possible to climb its 228 steps to the top, which features sweeping views of the city skyline and the sea.

I really wish I could say I had a great time at the Showboat Hotel and Casino, but honestly, it was a bit of a nightmare. First off, checking in was a real pain. The guy at the front desk seemed super annoyed by our request to be pre-registered and wasn't even wearing a name tag. Not the warm welcome you hope for. The hotel itself?. Well, it's seen better days, that's for sure. It felt old, dirty, and just gross. We specifically booked a nonsmoking room, but it still stank of cigarettes. The bed was so old and uncomfortable, I tossed and turned all night. There were some disturbing and disgusting stains on the wall. I don't even want to think about what they might have been, but they looked like blood stains. Finding our way around the hotel was a bit of a maze, too. The signs were confusing, and it took us a long time to find our room. And speaking of the room, we were supposed to have an ocean view, but nope, it was more like a view of the alleyway. We decided to cut our losses and check out early, but even that proved to be a hassle. The whole experience left me feeling so icky that I had to take a long shower as soon as I got home. Look, i dont want to bad-mouth anyone, but i genuinely think you can find much better places to stay in Atlantic City. The showboat just didnt cut it for me. Save yourself the trouble and book somewhere else. Trust me, your future self will thank you.

Showboat Stayed one night after the Ben to the Shore Bike Tour 2025. Pros: *Room was very nice and clean. I had went there years ago, when it was still a casino. The rooms are much better now. *Price: great price compared to other options *Location: on the boardwalk. If gambling is your thing, even thought Showboat doesn't have one, you can be in one in less than a 5 minute walk. Cons: *Front desk answers the phone 1 out of every 10 tries. *Our room did not have a hair dryer *Couple fighting outside our our room. I did call security and I believe they took care of, however there was shattered light bulb glass all over the floor the next morning when we walked out into the hallway. I am assuming it was related, but it is a little concerning that no one periodically patrols and saw that to clean it up. Overall: I would stay here again. Great price for the location, view from room, and quality of the room. However, I am a little concerned about not being able to phone the front desk.
