Back in the day, the site that would one day become home to the SLS Hotel & Casino Las Vegas was a place where you might spot Frank Sinatra sidling up to the bar for a cocktail, or John Lennon sunning outside. There’s still no shortage of diversions; though the hotel is conveniently located right on the strip, you don’t even need to leave the hotel to court Lady Luck, as the SLS has its own casino. Eight onsite restaurants cater to just about any craving, whether you want to sit down to an traditional Japanese meal or dig in to a wood-fired pizza.

The Las Vegas Strip and Beyond: Old Vegas, Red Rock Canyon, and the Hoover Dam

Las Vegas may be known for its casinos, but even Sin City isn’t all casinos, all the time. Go shopping at the high-end boutiques found inside most hotels on the Las Vegas Strip, or head to Fashion Show Las Vegas to browse racks at Neiman Marcus, Macy’s, and Saks Fifth Avenue. You can also virtually travel the globe in just a few city blocks, thanks to the Strip’s re-creation of the Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower, and Venetian canals. And you’ll find a surprising number of shows in Las Vegas for kids hidden among the raucous nightlife.

It can feel like the entire city of Las Vegas revolves around the Strip if you never venture beyond that neon-lit corridor. But there’s plenty to see and do once you step off Las Vegas Boulevard. You can find a taste of Old Vegas on Fremont Street, where vintage signs and showgirls crowned with headdresses recall the days of Sinatra and Martin. Nature puts on its own show at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, a landscape of fiery-red sandstone formations and limestone cliffs just 17 miles outside the city. Motor down the 13-mile scenic drive or ditch the car and strike out on any of more than 20 hiking trails that course through the region’s otherworldly topography.

Hoover Dam, a marvel of modern engineering, lies just 35 miles away, near the Nevada–Arizona border. Take the 30-minute power-plant tour or the 60-minute dam tour, which takes visitors inside the dam’s narrow passageways. You can actually kayak down the Colorado River from the base of the dam—just be sure to arrive early, as only 30 permits are issued per day.
