Storied Inn and Spa in New England

If walls could talk, these would recite passages from the classics of American literature. Maxwell Perkins, the celebrated editor who elevated Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald to fame, once lived in the building that is now Snapdragon Inn. Built in 1815, the brick home recently underwent renovations that transformed it into an elegant inn and spa. The luxury boutique hotel preserves its literary roots with a wood-paneled library and en suite book collections. Throughout the property, chic decor recalls the glamour of Perkins’s 1920s heyday.

Food & Wine magazine named Snapdragon Inn one of America’s Best Bed and Breakfasts in 2011. Each of the guest rooms has an updated look—pastel walls surround large colonial windows, from which sunlight spills across custom-upholstered armchairs and Victorian-style bed benches. The vibe extends to adjoining bathrooms, which have radiant floor heating.

Steps away from the guest rooms, Snapdragon’s spa pampers clients with organic products and lush robes. Stop here for a relaxing massage, cleansing facial, or soothing body treatment.

Windsor, Vermont: Charming Riverfront Town Steeped in History

Located near Vermont’s New Hampshire border, Windsor’s Main Street features quaint antique stores and notable historical buildings. Take a stroll across the Cornish–Windsor Covered Bridge; it stretches nearly 450 feet across the Connecticut River, making it one of the longest covered bridges in America.

The restored 18th-century tavern known as the Old Constitution House stands nearby. The pub-turned-museum looks nearly the same as it did some 200 years ago, when the first state constitution prohibiting slavery was signed there. Nearby, at Artisans Park, local artists create fine glass and pottery. Visitors can taste beer, spirits, and cheeses and walk through the beautiful riverside sculpture garden.
