Big Bear Lake, California: Outdoorsy Resort Community in the Foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains

Big Bear Lake is situated nearly 7,000 feet above sea level and surrounded by the San Bernardino National Forest and the snowy peaks of the San Bernardino Mountains. Los Angeles is less than 100 miles to the west, which is probably why Big Bear Valley has served as a backdrop for so many films and TV shows, including The Parent Trap, Doctor Dolittle, and Bonanza.

The lake is a popular destination for boating, fishing, and swimming during the warm months. You’ll find miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails in the surrounding forest. The 2-mile Castle Rock Trail weaves through groves of pine and cedar trees and past a waterfall before rewarding trekkers with a panoramic view of the water. But Big Bear isn’t entirely rustic—head to the village, located on the south shore, for restaurants, shopping, an arcade, a bowling alley, and a visitors’ center.

True to its name, the area once supported a thriving grizzly-bear population. Though that’s no longer the case, you still might see bald eagles, mule deer, coyotes, gray foxes, and even the occasional bobcat or black bear. For a guaranteed glimpse of wildlife, visit the Big Bear Alpine Zoo, a rehabilitation facility for injured and orphaned mountain lions, grizzly bears, wolves, and other animals.

Two separate rooms each with their own fireplace! The kitchen was awesome after two long days of snowboarding and skiing. The staff was awesome too!

Great trip! We stayed here for a week as a school group of 37. We had a great time at the hotel where there’s plenty on offer. The good was great but the staff were absolutely excellent! Shout out to Joel on reception who made our visit a great experience by always helping at the drop of a hat. As a school group from the UK we were very impressed!

Dated but for the price you can't go wrong. Really dated, and a small room. Our room was clean and the bathroom was very clean. Super good deal if you get your lift tickets when booking. I paid $38 for each lift ticket. The bartender was great, and the sauna + hot tub were awesome. I could see how some people might hate this place if they are used to 4-5 star hotels.

Pleasantly surprised This was our first time staying at this lodge. The check in was good except for them needing to put a 10 dollar hold on a credit card which I think is archaic. The lobby was open and airy and welcoming. this lodge has an elevator which is a great thing. It was the beginning of the season so the bar and the restaurant were not open so I can not comment on them. The location is as close as you are going to et to the mountain for the most reasonable price. The room we had was a king room with a seperate living room area which had a pull out couch if you had more people. There was also an in room coffee maker. The bathroom was very adequet, Clean with pleanty of towels and seemed to be updated recently. My only complaint was the mirrors are set to high for myself who stands at 5ft 4in. I had trouble taking out my contacts since I could not get close enough to he mirror unless I was standing on my tip toes. Both rooms had separate thermostats and a door to the bedroom for privacy. There was also a fridge and a microwave, Each aea also had nice size flat screen tv. The breakfast was continental but they did have hard boiled eggs and a bowl of fresh fruit salad as well as pastries and bagels and juice and your standard coffee and tea. They had an outdoor hot tub as well as indoor. Both appeared clean and spotless They only disappointment was no fire place. When staying in Vermont you want that ambieance. Maybe they will fix it and that will be resolved I would definetly stay here again
