Snowmass Village: Mountain Town Once Home to Mammoths
In October 2010, longtime construction worker Jessie Steele found himself in a familiar place: the driver's seat of a bulldozer. But while working on a project in Snowmass Village's Ziegler Reservoir, Jesse unearthed something more than mud. There, sticking up from one of his loads of dirt, he spotted several bones. Museum researchers soon descended upon the village; as it turned out, Jesse had discovered a site teeming with fossilized mammoths, mastodons, and other Ice Age creatures. Today, visitors can marvel at—and even touch—the remnants of these majestic beasts at the Ice Age Discovery Center.
The discovery put Snowmass Village in the spotlight, but to many outdoors enthusiasts, the village was hardly a revelation. At well above 12,000 feet, the area offers four seasons' worth of activities, from skiing and snowboarding on 94 different trails to hiking and biking on 40 miles of furrowed ridges and plunging valleys. Every summer, the annual Snowmass Mammoth Fest hosts three days of live music, beer, and chili in the village. Even when there isn't a festival happening, visitors can find all sorts of sustenance at more than 30 local eateries, ranging from quaint coffee shops to elegant slopeside restaurants.
