Tucson, Arizona: Southwestern History and Culture Amid the Cacti

Tucson—or the Old Pueblo—is a bastion of southwestern culture surrounded by mountains and desert. Over the city’s long history, it's absorbed elements from the many peoples who have lived or passed through here: Native Americans, Europeans, Latinos, and Asians to name a few. Today, this unique blend is especially evident in the downtown restaurant scene, where you can get authentic chilies rellenos, sushi, and upscale bistro fare with fine wines from nearby vintners.

Those willing to make the short trip outside of downtown can soak up the area's gorgeous natural landscape at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, a combined botanical garden and zoo. Here, mountain lions, gila monsters, and more than 1,200 kinds of plants inhabit 21 acres of desert scenery.

Mission San Xavier del Bac, the "White Dove of the Desert," is one of the oldest intact European structures in Arizona. This sprawling white adobe church, located about 10 miles south of downtown, was built in the 1700s. It's a striking example of the area's Spanish colonial architecture, with an interior adorned with frescoes and sculptures.

Pleasantly surprised after the negative reviews We arrived with some trepidation, after reading some of the reviews, for a 4 night stay and were pleasantly surprised. The hotel showed full on all the booking websites so we arrived early yo get the best room, we were welcomed by Andy, a very nice guy, who gave us a choice of rooms with some suggestions which were the best ones to take. We were given a room upgrade to a loft, a big room which would sleep 6 people perfectly well. To be honest the room was a bit dated and the carpets a bit stained but overall the room was nice and clean. The rooms are exceptionally large having a full kitchen, including oven, microwave, fridge/freezer and a dish washer (no tablets), the aircon and ceiling vans cooled the room very well. The breakfast was very good, I am not sure what other reviews complain about with a grab and go, there was a good choice of cereals, bagels, toast wraps, pancakes and hot food, along with some fruit and the usual coffee and hot water. Perfectly adequate for a good start to a few days sight seeing. The hotel is on a main road but we didn't hear any noise and perfect for Cabino Canyon, Mt Lemmon and Saguaro East, all within 10 mins drive, the other major sights of Pima Air Museum and Titan Missile are a little drive but the road system is quick and efficient.

BE ADVISED STAY AT YOUR OWN RISK. Just to start off the staff are the only positive thing about this place. They were really friendly and clearly doing their best with what they have. I am convinced this establishment has serious upper management issues due to the fact that the rooms have not been kept up, deep cleaned, or managed well in anyway. The first room we were given had a dirty carpet, an old dirty sofa and an off putting smell. Once we opened the sofa bed there was crumbs, dust, trash all over it, it was clearly dirty and had not been cleaned in who knows how long. Honestly there's more but I feel like it's not worth my time. We ended up getting another room which smelled like animal urine and had a disgusting carpet. Dirty cabinets. Completely uncomfortable stay. Definitely not worth the price. Pictures online are highly inaccurate.
