Duluth, Georgia: Historical Town on Chattahoochee River Just Outside Atlanta
A few years after the Civil War, a railroad came to Duluth, infusing the small town with a newfound vitality. Duluth’s Southeastern Railway Museum chronicles the history of Georgia’s railroads with exhibits of century-old Pullman cars and restored cabooses, as well as special events for kids. The town’s rich past is also evident at the Duluth Historical Society, which is housed in the stately former home of Georgia’s first female mayor.
The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is about 30 minutes outside of town and is well suited for kayaking, rafting, and hiking. The park is known for its colorful wildflowers, including lady slipper orchids and rare Georgia asters. The latter show off brilliant purple blooms in October and November.
Duluth is about 30 miles from Atlanta, where you can tour the CNN headquarters and World of Coca-Cola. You can also explore the Georgia Aquarium—one of the world’s largest aquariums—and the High Museum of Art, where works by Monet and Toulouse-Lautrec hang alongside historic photographs of the civil rights movement.
