Beyond the Las Vegas Strip: Old Vegas, Red Rock Canyon, and the Hoover Dam

It can feel like the entire city of Las Vegas revolves around the Strip if you never venture beyond that neon-lit corridor. But there’s plenty to see and do once you step off Las Vegas Boulevard. You can find a taste of Old Vegas on Fremont Street, where vintage signs and showgirls crowned with headdresses recall the days of Sinatra and Martin. Beginning at dusk, a canopy of more than 12 million LED lights erupts in a psychedelic light-and-music show every hour. For an aerial view, zoom down the center of Fremont Street on a zipline.

Nature puts on its own show at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, a landscape of fiery-red sandstone formations and limestone cliffs just 17 miles outside the city. Motor down the 13-mile scenic drive or ditch the car and strike out on any of more than 20 hiking trails that course through the region’s otherworldly topography.

Hoover Dam, a marvel of modern engineering, lies just 35 miles away, near the Nevada–Arizona border. Take the 30-minute power-plant tour or the 60-minute dam tour, which takes visitors inside the dam’s narrow passageways. You can actually kayak down the Colorado River from the base of the dam—just be sure to arrive early, as only 30 permits are issued per day.

A visit worth taking This is our favorite hotel for the last 10 years or so we have been coming to South Point. We were not even checked in when my brother won a jackpot on the Evel Knievel machine. Everyone here is very nice including Michelle in Host services she helped us when we checked out. Sarah is awesome in bingo. Ana and Robert in Coronado Cafe are excellent. Sarah Ochoa and Gabby in the business office we're very nice and helpful in wrapping some of our items to pack to come home. Roulette dealer Therna was very accommodating in spinning the numbers that I had been betting on. We especially wish to thank Kelly in the cashiers box, we've seen her and said hello every time we've been for the last 4 to 5 years. It's always our pleasure to visit with her for an extra minute or two. She's very nice to deal with. We thank everyone that we dealt with during our two stays at the South Point.

IM IN VEGAS 6 months a year! THAT IS MY FAVORITE PLACE From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by the warmest and friendliest host, making check-in a breeze. Our room was ready well before 3 p.m., setting the tone for an unforgettable stay. We were there for the photo booth convention, and I instantly fell in love with the hotel. The rooms were impeccably clean, and the service was both swift and welcoming. Everywhere you go, the bartenders are there to brighten your day with their friendly demeanor. And of course, I have to mention the oyster bar—my absolute favorite! Their happy hour is unbeatable, with talented chefs who spoil you with delightful little samples. Since February, I’ve returned four times, and I know it won’t be the last. Can’t wait to go back!

Hidden gem off strip Fun clean place that in all reality you dont have to leave. Many food and entertainment choices. Clean and modern feel. Front desk was awesome to deal with and very informative. Parking garage on ground and easy to navigate. Only drawback, the casino is very smokey and smells of it. Not terrible but detectable. Unlike many Las Vegas Casinos.
