Nob Hill, San Francisco: Fashionable Neighborhood with Scenic City Views

One of the original seven hills on which the city was built, Nob Hill is a fashionable, upscale neighborhood, once referred to as a “Hill of Palaces” because of its many estates. Huntington Park is the centerpiece for the bustling district, and it’s bordered by Grace Cathedral, a beautiful Gothic-style building with colorful mosaics and a replica of the medieval labyrinth in France’s Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres.

Just downhill from Nob Hill is the Russian Hill neighborhood, whose notoriously steep roads provide some of the city's most scenic vistas. From the top of Russian Hill, you can drive down Lombard Street, often dubbed “the world’s crookedest street” for its eight tight hairpin turns. The street is lined with stately houses and meticulously manicured gardens. A few blocks south, the tiny Ina Coolbrith Park is made up of tucked-away terraces cut into a steep slope between Russian Hill and Nob Hill. The secluded space is considered a local hidden gem for its postcard-worthy views of downtown. In 2008, SF Weekly named it the Best Park Named for a Poet Laureate—Ina Coolbrith was the first person to hold the esteemed title.

San Francisco's iconic cable cars head up and down the streets of Nob Hill and Russian Hill. The nearby Cable Car Museum fills you in on the history of the iconic San Francisco tradition. You can hop on one of the cable cars and head north to reach Ghirardelli Square’s high-end boutiques and Pier 39’s seafood restaurants, or take a cable car south to see Chinatown—one of the largest Chinese communities outside of Asia—and the quaint cafés in the Italian-influenced North Beach neighborhood.

It’s fine I may have expected too much, but with so many good reviews and recommendations from random blogs, I had high hopes. But, it was just… fine. Could definitely do worse, but nothing I’d return for. Location is great, really close to a lot of the city. Our room was clean, decent view of the city. Nice size tv. Otherwise unremarkable. Lobby was nice, but small. Nice little bar area. What was super annoying was there was only 1 elevator working for all 8 floors! I get that sometimes renovations are necessary. But it just made the hotel feel cheap when we’re all pulling into a small elevator after waiting for a long time. And no free anything to make up for it. I didn’t eat the breakfast, but it looked not great. Surprised anyone would eat it with so much better food around.

Toilet would not flush/terrible elevators Disappointed our auto flush toilet did not flush once during our visit no matter what we tried. The elevators are terrible and even closed within seconds of opening while my daughter was walking through them. It was a hard close which hit her and jolted her pretty bad. The elevators feel very unstable and a rough ride for sure. The front desk took the destination fee of $35 off for our non flushing toilet which was definitely not worth it. We didn't want to make a big fuss as 2 females traveling alone doesn't feel safe having a maintenance worker in your room working. Our trip was a quick overnight with much of it being gone to a concert thankfully. The valet was wonderful and I can say very kind and helpful.

Central Location, Quality Staff, Good Stay Very good central location on a very popular street. Our room was faced away from the street and we heard virtually no noise all night. Lobby was updated and modern, rooms were clean, slightly dated but had all the features you’d need in a short stay. Stay was friendly and attentive. Will be staying here on our next SF Visit. Jeffrey was pleasant at checkout.
