Nob Hill, San Francisco: Fashionable Neighborhood with Scenic City Views

One of the original seven hills on which the city was built, Nob Hill is a fashionable, upscale neighborhood, once referred to as a “Hill of Palaces” because of its many estates. Huntington Park is the centerpiece for the bustling district, and it’s bordered by Grace Cathedral, a beautiful Gothic-style building with colorful mosaics and a replica of the medieval labyrinth in France’s Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres.

Just downhill from Nob Hill is the Russian Hill neighborhood, whose notoriously steep roads provide some of the city's most scenic vistas. From the top of Russian Hill, you can drive down Lombard Street, often dubbed “the world’s crookedest street” for its eight tight hairpin turns. The street is lined with stately houses and meticulously manicured gardens. A few blocks south, the tiny Ina Coolbrith Park is made up of tucked-away terraces cut into a steep slope between Russian Hill and Nob Hill. The secluded space is considered a local hidden gem for its postcard-worthy views of downtown. In 2008, SF Weekly named it the Best Park Named for a Poet Laureate—Ina Coolbrith was the first person to hold the esteemed title.

San Francisco's iconic cable cars head up and down the streets of Nob Hill and Russian Hill. The nearby Cable Car Museum fills you in on the history of the iconic San Francisco tradition. You can hop on one of the cable cars and head north to reach Ghirardelli Square’s high-end boutiques and Pier 39’s seafood restaurants, or take a cable car south to see Chinatown—one of the largest Chinese communities outside of Asia—and the quaint cafés in the Italian-influenced North Beach neighborhood.

Very nice, 4-star boutique hotel with modern amenities. Great location on Nob Hill and access to sights. Great location, great staff, comfortable and satisfying. Located right near the Powell cable car route. It is not a resort, but rather is a nice 4-star boutique hotel. Great breakfast, although pricey. The only issues were that a few elevators were not working, so we used staff elevators to get to the 6th floor (not a major issue) and there was no closet, so you have to use hangers on a hanging rack in the room. Adequate fitness facility, although a few more machines for a more comprehensive workout would be nice. Otherwise, a very pleasant stay.

No lifts working!!! Poor form Stayed here for 3 nights in June. First day one of the guest lifts was working and after that we could only use the service lift. Being on the top floor was a long wait. If there was ever a fire or emergency this hotel would be in a lot of trouble. Get your lifts fixed asap especially the price you charge for rooms. This review would have been 3 to 4 stars if not for the lifts.

Favorite Hotel in SF_ I had the most wonderful experience staying at Stanford Court. The hotel is perfectly located right next to the San Francisco cable car line — you can hop on just a minute away! The views from the hotel are simply stunning, especially from the panoramic gym. It’s filled with modern equipment and has everything you need for a full workout, all while enjoying the city skyline. The on-site restaurant is fantastic — elegant, stylish, and the food is delicious. Breakfasts were large, flavorful portions that kept me full and happy for hours. The atmosphere throughout the hotel is both vibrant and cozy, and what truly stood out was the incredibly kind and welcoming staff. Everyone I met was helpful and warm. This hotel combines comfort, location, and style in the best possible way. I can’t wait to come back!
