Nob Hill, San Francisco: Fashionable Neighborhood with Scenic City Views

One of the original seven hills on which the city was built, Nob Hill is a fashionable, upscale neighborhood, once referred to as a “Hill of Palaces” because of its many estates. Huntington Park is the centerpiece for the bustling district, and it’s bordered by Grace Cathedral, a beautiful Gothic-style building with colorful mosaics and a replica of the medieval labyrinth in France’s Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres.

Just downhill from Nob Hill is the Russian Hill neighborhood, whose notoriously steep roads provide some of the city's most scenic vistas. From the top of Russian Hill, you can drive down Lombard Street, often dubbed “the world’s crookedest street” for its eight tight hairpin turns. The street is lined with stately houses and meticulously manicured gardens. A few blocks south, the tiny Ina Coolbrith Park is made up of tucked-away terraces cut into a steep slope between Russian Hill and Nob Hill. The secluded space is considered a local hidden gem for its postcard-worthy views of downtown. In 2008, SF Weekly named it the Best Park Named for a Poet Laureate—Ina Coolbrith was the first person to hold the esteemed title.

San Francisco's iconic cable cars head up and down the streets of Nob Hill and Russian Hill. The nearby Cable Car Museum fills you in on the history of the iconic San Francisco tradition. You can hop on one of the cable cars and head north to reach Ghirardelli Square’s high-end boutiques and Pier 39’s seafood restaurants, or take a cable car south to see Chinatown—one of the largest Chinese communities outside of Asia—and the quaint cafés in the Italian-influenced North Beach neighborhood.

Bad experience. Hotel’s elevators do not work! They skip cleaning your room as well! Just spent 4 nights at this hotel. Elevators do not work! Surprisingly, they have been broken for a while and will continue to be that way for some time. In a normal situation, the hotel should have clearly warned its clients (before confirming a reservation) that elevators are out on maintenance. Here it was not the case. The staff’s reaction to my complaint was “but you can always use the service elevator!” Really? Is it even safe to not have elevators running properly? On top of that, the hotel didn’t clean our room for a whole day (not to mention that the drainage from the tub was not working properly and we needed to call maintenance in). Terrible experience. Go somewhere else.

Disappointing Stay – Far from a 4-Star Experience I had high hopes for our one-night stay at the Stanford Court Hotel, located next to the Fairmont and Intercontinental Mark Hopkins in San Francisco’s upscale Nob Hill area. The hotel is rated as a 4-star property on multiple platforms — including Capital One Travel (Hopper) and TripAdvisor — so we expected a certain level of quality and comfort. We were in town for a wedding at the Fairmont that began at 4:30 pm, so we checked in right at 4:00 pm, rushing to get our luggage to the room. Check-in was quick and efficient, but we were immediately told that two of the elevators were broken and the wait would be long. The front desk suggested we use the service elevator, which didn’t set the best tone for our stay though we appreciated the option since we were pressed for time. Out of curiosity, I later looked at reviews on Facebook and noticed that someone had mentioned the elevators were also broken on August 31st — meaning they had apparently been nonfunctional for nearly two months by October 25th or this is a recurring issue, neither acceptable. By checkout time the following day at 12 noon on October 26th, they were still not repaired. After returning to the hotel around 1:30 am following the wedding, we noticed several shortcomings (as shown in the attached photos) that were far below what one would expect from a 4-star hotel. The room itself was small — understandable for San Francisco — but the real issue was the lack of cleanliness, poor maintenance, and overall condition of the room. We had booked a Premier Interior Room with two queen beds, which the hotel’s website describes as “Retreat and recharge. These interior-facing rooms overlook our quiet courtyard.” In reality, what we saw from our window was anything but a quiet courtyard — and the room fell short of nearly every expectation we had for a property of this caliber. I reached out to the General Manager the next day, requesting a return call to discuss our experience, but as of this writing, no one has responded. In summary: this stay did not reflect a 4-star experience in any way. The ongoing elevator issues, lack of attention to maintenance, and poor follow-up from management speak volumes about the hotel’s current standards. I strongly recommend that any potential guest carefully review the photos attached to this post before booking — they tell the story far better than words can.

Great customer service Our first time staying at Stanford Ct. Maria checked us in and went above and beyond to make our stay memorable. We asked for a quiet floor and room to accommodate hearing sensitivity and she did that and more. Will now be staying here for both work and personal because of her customer service. It's clean, spacious, and in a great location!
