The Wildwoods, New Jersey: Classic Boardwalk Fun and Doo-Wop-Era History

Less than an hour south of Atlantic City, you’ll find the Wildwoods, a cluster of towns set on a barrier island just off New Jersey’s southernmost point. Though the area is more subdued than Atlantic City, families will still find a dizzying assortment of carnival rides, malt shops, and arcade games along the Wildwoods Boardwalk.

During the 1950s and ’60s, the area became a hot spot for up-and-coming rock and doo-wop singers, including Chubby Checker, Bill Haley, and Bobby Rydell, who immortalized the city’s carefree spirit in the tune “Wildwood Days.” You can learn more about the era at the Doo Wop Experience and Neon Sign Garden, which pays homage to mid-20th-century music, decor, and advertising.

The pool was perfectly heated. I also got to use one of their bikes to ride the boardwalk before check-out.

Great place about a block off boardwalk Starlux is a retro hotel located about a block off the boardwalk in Wildwood NJ. right at the Wildwoods sign. Place is very clean and well maintained. Easy walk to boardwalk and they have bikes for guests to borrow. Bob, at the desk was very helpful in giving directions and helping with getting around the area.

Good choice in Wildwood! Pros: Bob at the front desk was fantastic. He remembers names, was helpful and friendly at all times. Kind of like a retro resort manager, more than hotel staff. Property was well-maintained and clean. Loved the vintage, family friendly vibe. Music at the pool was retro and family friendly! Free to borrow bikes and beach supplies, free laundry, fantastic continental breakfast in clean area were all appreciated! We had a king one bedroom with a pullout sofa. Definitely small for a family of 4, but clean and fine for a short stay. Balcony overlooked mini-golf next door (the resort offers a discount and it was a fun course). Housekeeping was available daily, which these days seems rare. Location was terrific, across the street from beach, boardwalk and walking distance to many restaurants. Plenty of parking. Cons: other than Bob, we didn't have any experiences with other staff that left a welcoming impression. The bathroom was tiny! Some shelving or storage would be hugely helpful. A small coffee table or ottoman in the living room would be nice for games or snacks. Housekeeping did not replenish shampoo, etc. Would recommend highly! Thanks, Bob!

Vacation The hotel was clean , though the bathroom could use updating, the fixtures were rusted , the toliet was difficult to flush . The Front Desk Clerk Bob was the friendliest desk clerk I have encountered in a long time . He truly knows the meaning to guest service.
