Hotel at a Glance: The State House Inn

The State House Inn is surrounded by history in downtown Springfield—it’s an easy walk to Abraham Lincoln’s home, his law office, and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The hotel even has a bit of history itself. First opened in 1961, it recently underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation to restore it to its midcentury glory. Retro early ’60s touches can be seen throughout the hotel, from the molded-plastic chairs in the cocktail lounge to the clean lines and mod furnishings in the guest rooms and suites.

  • A free breakfast spread may include hot eggs and meats, cereal, waffles, and pastries.
  • Sleep easy in the guest rooms that feature pillow-top mattresses draped in comfy duvets, as well as complimentary WiFi.
  • Work out: The fitness center features cardio equipment and weights.

Springfield, Illinois: Lincoln Landmarks on Route 66

Springfield proudly upholds its duties as the capital of the Land of Lincoln—numerous important places from the 16th president’s life are carefully maintained here. In addition to the Lincoln home and his presidential library, you can visit his tomb at Oak Ridge Cemetery and the train depot where he bid farewell to his friends and neighbors before departing for Washington, DC.

Located along the famous Route 66, Springfield is also home to slices of quirky Americana such as Cozy Dog, a drive-in diner that claims to have invented the batter-coated wiener on a stick. Architecture buffs can tour Frank Lloyd Wright’s 12,000-square-foot Dana-Thomas House, an early example of the famed designer’s Prairie style.

Service was great. Rooms were clean. The hotel is right in the heart of Springfield so you're within walking distance of all the sites. Would definitely recommend the hotel and Springfield as a great place to visit, especially as a family.

Past its' prime - beaty is only skin deep Stayed for 5 nights with wife and kids in a double room. Pros: Centrally located in relation to downtown and the capitol but the area is oretty mich a ghost town. Wifi fast Lobby good Bathrooms good Affordable Cons: Cleaning and housekeeping below expected standard. A/C a bit wonky but got fixed Breakfast: single use plates/cutlery, nothing fancy. Cereal, stale bagels, lard inferno (bacon, sceamvled eggs with cheese) and bake-you-own waffle (kids liked it). Keycards outdated and failing after 1 day General condition of rooms a bit below expected standard

No AC, no service DO NOT STAY HERE. Starting off, the room descriptions online are not accurate. I initially booked a suite that offered a roll-in bed. When i asked about it during check-in, she said it wouldn't fit in the room. We switched rooms to a double, but she then realized that the room wasn't clean *we were checking in after 4:00*. The AC was broken in the room we ended up staying and every time we went back downstairs, there was no one at the desk to ask to switch Later when i arrived home, I realized that I had been charged 3 times for a 1 night stay. I called the desk and the manager's extension numerous times, but no one picked up and the voicemail was full. Now I have to dispute the claim with my bank. Wish me luck!

Great location, but wonky stay. Great location but a wonky stay. Don't even bother with the hotel bar - warm beer and wine, no frills, and an uninspiring vibe. It's no wonder no one goes. Plus, you have to ask if it's even going to be open - or not. Upon arrival, I noticed an unwiped counter in my room and no toilet paper on the holder in the bathroom (but there were some full rolls on the shelves above the toilet). Rooms are small, but manageable. They called my hotel room phone at 11:16 pm to see if my room was actually occupied. and woke me up. I'm not sure what the confusion was - but I thought to myself, geez - was the room actually cleaned? Morning shower consisted of only conditioner and lotion. No shampoo. I didn't realize this until it was too late. The hair dryer squeeled and I swear, almost sparked. I left with damp hair. Breakfast was a non-starter. At 8:10 when I arrived, coffee was gone and so were the eggs. But, like I said, great location, free parking, and a reasonable-ish price. I think they just need more help. They have good product potential.
