The old part to Staunton was like stepping back in time. The hotel rises above the town and is a beautiful focal point. Unfortunately we stayed on a Monday night which for some reason is when the town shuts down early. We had a good Mexican meal and good beer at the only place open and a fun walk around the old town. We came from San Diego so the historic buildings were so neat and the kids had a great time running around the empty streets and the pool of course.

Hotel at a Glance: Stonewall Jackson Hotel

When the Stonewall Jackson Hotel underwent a $21 million renovation in 2005, the goal wasn’t to get with the times—it was to preserve the past. Inside, you’ll find chandeliers and wall sconces that look as elegant as they did when the hotel opened in 1924. And in the restored mezzanine there’s a working 1924 Wurlitzer organ, considered to be the only one of its kind left in the world. Double-queen guest rooms are located in the newest part of the hotel, and king rooms are located in the historic wing; both include free WiFi and flatscreen TVs.

  • Eat well: This deal includes a $10 daily dining credit to the nearby Shenandoah Pizza and Taphouse, and a $15 daily dining credit to the onsite Sorrel’s or 24 Market Restaurant.
  • Raise a glass at the lobby cocktail lounge; try the Stonewall Jackson, which pairs house rum with pineapple and cranberry juice.
  • Take a dip in the heated indoor swimming pool, or steam away cares in the hot tub.

Staunton, Virginia: Historic Small Town in the Shenandoah Valley

Staunton sits in the picturesque Shenandoah Valley between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains, about 90 minutes from Richmond and two hours from Washington, DC. Free trolley cars run along the town’s historic main street, which is lined with well-preserved examples of several 19th-century architectural styles. Another striking structure is the Blackfriars Playhouse, where the American Shakespeare Center performs the Bard’s plays in a replica of the Elizabethan theater where many of them were originally staged.

Staunton’s most famous son is Woodrow Wilson, so it’s fitting that his presidential library is here. Inside, you’ll find a host of exhibits relating to Wilson’s life, including personal belongings, photographs, and prank telegrams sent to foreign heads of state.

This hotel is in an amazing location, there are so may things to do right in town that are quite easy to walk to as well as many activities that are within driving distance. The room was spacious and clean and comfortable and all around amazing! That combined with the breakfasts and the various activities in the area made this an awesome trip and will definitely look into visiting here again.

Location is everything. The location of this hotel is ideal for those who want to explore downtown Staunton. It is a historic property with a lovely, grand lobby that is very appealing. That being said, the fact that it is a historic property is reflected in the look and feel of the rooms, aside from the very comfortable bed. There were a couple of minor cleanliness issues that I told the front desk about and they were quickly resolved. However, the iron was leaking and the replacement they brought was clearly dirty on the metal side. Not something I was comfortable using to press my clothes, so I didn’t. I purchased breakfast one morning and it was very good, but it was a little overpriced. I could have booked a room elsewhere at a cheaper rate that was much cleaner, better appointed and included breakfast within the price. Location is everything at this hotel.

Excellent location and comfortable hotel Excellent location to enjoy the American Shakespeare Theater and downtown dining. The rooms are a bit outdated, but still comfortable and clean. You can leave your car parked there and just walk to the ASC and downtown (5 min to everything). There is also an indoor swimming pool that the kids will enjoy.

Great location, mid-level hotel Nice place to stay, just don't expect a five-star experience. My wife and I spent three nights here, mainly because it is next door to the American Shakespeare Center. We booked a two-room suite and soon discovered that the air conditioning in one room wasn't working. Apparently, the hotel was awaiting a part that had been ordered. The next day, with the kind help of Emma, at the front desk, we were given a new suite and a discount on the first night. All good, but why was this suite being kept in service to begin with? Lobby is very nice, but rooms are somewhat shabby, but comfortable. Furniture is worn and chipped, decor is haphazard at best. Our bed was great, however. Overall, the location is terrific, within walking distance of all Staunton attractions. The staff was very helpful and friendly. Even though there were negatives, we will likely stay here again.
