Hotel at a Glance: Stonewall Jackson Hotel
When the Stonewall Jackson Hotel underwent a $21 million renovation in 2005, the goal wasn’t to get with the times—it was to preserve the past. Inside, you’ll find chandeliers and wall sconces that look as elegant as they did when the hotel opened in 1924. And in the restored mezzanine there’s a working 1924 Wurlitzer organ, considered to be the only one of its kind left in the world. Double-queen guest rooms are located in the newest part of the hotel, and king rooms are located in the historic wing; both include free WiFi and flatscreen TVs.
- Eat well: This deal includes a $10 daily dining credit to the nearby Shenandoah Pizza and Taphouse, and a $15 daily dining credit to the onsite Sorrel’s or 24 Market Restaurant.
- Raise a glass at the lobby cocktail lounge; try the Stonewall Jackson, which pairs house rum with pineapple and cranberry juice.
- Take a dip in the heated indoor swimming pool, or steam away cares in the hot tub.
Staunton, Virginia: Historic Small Town in the Shenandoah Valley
Staunton sits in the picturesque Shenandoah Valley between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains, about 90 minutes from Richmond and two hours from Washington, DC. Free trolley cars run along the town’s historic main street, which is lined with well-preserved examples of several 19th-century architectural styles. Another striking structure is the Blackfriars Playhouse, where the American Shakespeare Center performs the Bard’s plays in a replica of the Elizabethan theater where many of them were originally staged.
Staunton’s most famous son is Woodrow Wilson, so it’s fitting that his presidential library is here. Inside, you’ll find a host of exhibits relating to Wilson’s life, including personal belongings, photographs, and prank telegrams sent to foreign heads of state.
