Negril, Jamaica: Laid-Back Beach Town with Picturesque Sunsets, Snorkeling, and Cliff Diving

Located on Jamaica’s western coast, Negril is known for its white-sand beaches, dramatic rugged cliffs, and coral reefs lying just offshore in the Caribbean. Its underwater beauty makes the town a popular spot for scuba diving and snorkeling at Negril Marine Park, and anglers have found the sea filled with blue marlin, wahoo, and mahi-mahi. The city has a front-row seat to some of the world’s most beautiful sunsets, and people often climb to the top of waterfront cliffs just to watch. At Rick’s Cafe, which is listed in the book 1,000 Places To See Before You Die, groups congregate every night to watch the sun dip below the horizon; some brave adventurers even leap off the 35-foot cliffs into the water.

Often called "the capital of casual," Negril is best defined by its laid-back vibe, from the slow and steady rhythm of the indigenous reggae music to its unofficial uniform—swimsuits and flip-flops. Running along the town is Seven Mile Beach, a stretch of powdery, white-sand coastline that earned a spot on Frommer’s Best Beaches in the Caribbean list. The town center comprises a shopping mall and a craft market where visitors can pick up locally produced goods.

Tree frogs go “meep” Sunset at the Palms is one of the most relaxing places we have ever stayed in. It isn’t a large hotel and would not suit people looking for excitement but it is so welcoming and friendly with the nicest staff we have ever met. Everyone from the groundsmen and gardeners, the cleaning staff, the waiting staff, the bar staff, the pool staff and the chefs is proud of their resort and they are all so welcoming. The main grounds are well kept with trees, plants and lots of birds and tree frogs. This makes staying in one of the rooms, 11 steps up from the ground, an absolute delight. To walk the winding paths from your room to the main area is a joy at any time of the day with the sounds of the creatures all around. Our room was 101 (don’t laugh) and it had everything we needed. The bed was large and extremely comfortable, the air conditioning and ceiling fan helped us to adjust the temperature to exactly how we wanted it and the bathroom had a large shower (although occasionally the water was only lukewarm which was fine in this climate.) Our only slight concern was the storage space for clothes as this was a rail and some shelves but this did not cause us any problems once we settled in. The pool is lovely with clear, clean water and a swim up bar. We could always find a sun bed, possibly because a lot of people went to the beach. The beach is just across the road and there are people there to stop the traffic enabling you to cross safely. The beach itself is lovely with white sand and clear, warm sea. Staff assist you to find the best seats for your needs, under a cabana, a tree or in the sun. There is a bar there and they serve lunches which are cooked while you wait. There are also spotlessly clean toilets. Back in the main hotel the food is excellent. There is a buffet breakfast, lunch and evening meal and although the selection is not huge, the quality of the food available is exceptional. In the evenings the tables are beautifully arranged and set, a far cry from some buffets we have been to. Three times a week you can book into the Chef’s Showcase which is a 4 course sit down meal where the chefs prepare and serve their own creations. We went 5 times over our two week stay and every dish was different, possibly apart from the soup course where we may have had an amazing pumpkin soup twice. To watch the chefs’ pride in their food and how much care they take in presenting each course was delightful. There is also the Lotus Leaf restaurant three times a week which has an à la carte menu. This doesn’t appear to change but we ate there twice and enjoyed both meals. The concierge staff were always available and happy to help in any way they could. Talking to all the staff we felt that the management had built up such happy, loyal staff that they should be extremely proud.

Absolutely Lovely Experience!!! Just returned from Sunset At The Palms and have to share the love!! Stayed with 2 friends for 5 days; we were welcomed by the lovely Krystal (our Concierge) and was made to feel at home immediately! The rest of the staff took the reins for the rest of the week and as a long-time Service Industry employee back in Toronto I was constantly impressed with the genuine warmth and sincerity of each member of this resort!! Shout out to Tameka, Christina, Cornelius and the fine gentleman who led us on our garden tour...In short, if it is relaxation and quiet you are after for a getaway make it Sunset At The Palms. I shall be returning. Cheers!! Randall L.

Sunset at the Palms still a great option in Negril While in Negril for my birthday weekend, we enjoyed an evening at this property. The food in the main dining room was amaaaaazing. Service great. Then we went to the piano bar and played scrabble while sipping margaritas. The vibe was wonderful and we had great fun!
