Negril, Jamaica: Laid-Back Beach Town with Picturesque Sunsets, Snorkeling, and Cliff Diving

Located on Jamaica’s western coast, Negril is known for its white-sand beaches, dramatic rugged cliffs, and coral reefs lying just offshore in the Caribbean. Its underwater beauty makes the town a popular spot for scuba diving and snorkeling at Negril Marine Park, and anglers have found the sea filled with blue marlin, wahoo, and mahi-mahi. The city has a front-row seat to some of the world’s most beautiful sunsets, and people often climb to the top of waterfront cliffs just to watch. At Rick’s Cafe, which is listed in the book 1,000 Places To See Before You Die, groups congregate every night to watch the sun dip below the horizon; some brave adventurers even leap off the 35-foot cliffs into the water.

Often called "the capital of casual," Negril is best defined by its laid-back vibe, from the slow and steady rhythm of the indigenous reggae music to its unofficial uniform—swimsuits and flip-flops. Running along the town is Seven Mile Beach, a stretch of powdery, white-sand coastline that earned a spot on Frommer’s Best Beaches in the Caribbean list. The town center comprises a shopping mall and a craft market where visitors can pick up locally produced goods.

Holiday of a lifetime, honestly Holiday of a lifetime, honestly! The Palms is everything you would expect from the brochure, the reviews and the website, I cannot describe well enough this Jamaican Paradise. The resort is beautiful, lush tropical forest surrounds the whole site, Hummingbirds flit between the trees feeding off the stunning flowers planted along the paths between rooms. The rooms are fabulous, well equipped and spacious, more than enough for two, clean and tidy and well serviced, and yes they are on stilts 2m off the ground! The pool is perfectly sized for the number of guests, never crowded and always a lounger available at any time, not forgetting the swim up pool bar which has some killer cocktails and Red Strip on tap. The pool bar doubles as the entertainment area most evenings with local reggae bands and Karaoke - yes apparently I did a few songs but that night was a little hazy!! The cocktail bar is very good, a range of 10-12 Martinis as a speciality and other spirits on tap, all good quality branded types too, don't miss the piano man most nights who is brilliant, despite a piano in need of a tune up! The food was excellent, don't expect a vast array of dishes - your not at the Rui Palace after all, I enjoyed a freshly made omelette most mornings, cold meats and cheeses, loads of fresh fruit and pancakes/waffles, added to this were the local dishes of Salt fish and Ackee, callaloo and many more - delicious. Evening meals were outstanding, with themed nights for BBQ, Jamaican food etc, don't miss the curry goat. We dined at the Lotus restaurant 4 times, all excellent, the chef's showcase was delicious (twice) as was the special menu - especially the red snapper. The beach bar was excellent, great drinks similar to the pool bar, brilliant staff who always had a welcoming smile, we ate lunch there every day, I think I had mostly jerk chicken which was excellent, Thursdays had a chef come down and demonstrate a local dish on the beach, thanks Shane, brilliant display of expertise and excellent food, again I think the battered fish with smashed plantain was outstanding. The beach, short walk over the road - no drama - was swept daily and is exactly like the pictures, absolutely perfect with fine sand and crystal waters, as a musician I loved the odd busker walking by and dropping a couple of tunes for a tip, not intrusive at all and adds to the charm of the place. What sets Sunset at the palms apart from any other place I have been is the staff, they are genuinely lovely people, always happy to help, always with a smile and they really do make the place a joy to visit

Wonderful stay, exceeded expectations We had an 11 day stay at Sunset at the Palms from the last week of September into the first week of October. We had a delayed flight in, arriving quite late at night. On arrival we were greeted and were shown to our room very promptly by Ainsworth, a polite and friendly young man. The resort had put away a plate of food each for us due to our late arrival and this was brought to our room whilst we unpacked. We found this to be a thoughtful touch and was a good start in terms of the service we received. As our stay went on this good start was exceeded on so many levels. We found staff to be genuinely friendly; not one member of staff failed to greet us as we passed around the resort, and all took the time to help with a smile on their face. So many examples of staff who went above and beyond: • Linford & Jason (gardeners) taking the time to explain the various plantings and offering coconuts that had just fallen off the trees • Housekeeping – Laverne kept our room spotless as well as decorated with brilliant towel art. • Claudette, Andre & Tamika (amazing singer as well as waitress) and all the servers checking that everything was ok, topping up drinks and always a friendly word or joke. • Damian & all the lifeguards for sorting out the cabanas and advising on possible trips – had a great snorkel trip through them. • The reception staff who dealt with any enquiry or issue – sorry no names but you were all brilliant. • Patrick, Britney and all the bar staff – prompt, friendly and willing to try to make cocktails not on the menu and to recommend drinks or brands based on our preferences. • The cooking staff. All the staff were talented and dedicated. I particularly enjoyed Chef Shane’s cooking demonstrations on the beach immensely, both the detailed explanations as well as the eating of it. Delicious. • Security staff. Saw us safely across the road between resort and beach area and always asked how our day had been. We always felt safe on the beach – visible security who did challenge people who strayed off the public area. We felt completely secure leaving belongings at the cabanas whilst in the water. So staff were superb. Other aspects: Food The buffet meals were generally good. Breakfast was a mix of standard buffet hot foods and cereals, cold meats, cheese and fruits with a daily Jamaican hot breakfast selection too. Lunch is al la carte on both the resort and beach bar. Food there was good, recommend the burgers, club sandwich and specials (which changed daily). Evening meals were either buffet or a booked meal (I’ll explain that later) except Wednesday when there is a BBQ option for everyone. The buffet theme changed daily. There was scope for a four course meal (starter, soup, entrée and dessert) and the range was reasonable. One improvement I would suggest is some sort of indication on level of spice/heat on the description of the dish. This would certainly have helped me select courses without asking the staff all the time. The booked meal option was either a la carte in the Lotus Leaf or the Chef’s showcase. These ran on different days and had to be booked through reception. The Lotus Leaf had a fixed menu of three starter, 2 soups, 2 salads, around 10 entrée and 4 desserts. The food we had there was excellent, well presented and very delicious. Service was first rate too. The Chef’s showcase in many ways I felt was the star of the show, but not just because of the food which was always excellent. It was a fixed menu but different each time. What made it stand out for me was that the chef’s preparing each course were in the early stages of their careers and this was their opportunity to showcase their talents and meals. This shows a willingness on the resort’s part to develop and support their staff which reflects so positively on them. Resort, grounds & beach The resort grounds are beautiful, well kept but not in a manicured formal way. You have the sense of being in the tropics not a garden. The wildlife is varied – we enjoyed watching hummingbirds feed whilst laying in bed (don’t forget to ask for a feeder from reception) as well as spotting other birds and lizards etc as we walked around. The resort buildings and facilities are generally well maintained and kept very clean – the beach restrooms are among the nicest I have ever seen! The beach is beautiful and well maintained; always free from rubbish and raked for leaves etc from the trees that line it. The water was crystal clear, excellent visibility and warm and clean. Snorkelling off the beach is limited to passing wildlife as there is no real seaweed or habitat but I still saw rays, various fish and starfish off the beach. Entertainment The resort clientele tended to be 30+ with most being 50+ but also there were a few younger couple who were honeymooning there. There was always some form of evening entertainment that catered for a range of interests. Unless you are more into foam parties and the party resort vibe then there was something to engage you, even if it was just a quiet drink or board game with others. It is a place you go to relax, and the feel of the resort reflected this. We gravitated to the Martini piano bar where Paul played four times a week. Lovely man, brilliant entertainer and piano player. Didn’t miss seeing and singing along with him once whilst there. Staff joined in with songs when passing – that’s how we know Tamika has an amazing voice! Only wished that the piano was more in tune but given it is the tropics I know how difficult it is to keep them tuned. Top tip, be brave and sit at the piano and enjoy the banter and singing along no matter how bad you are – I crushed American Pie whilst sitting there, although some may say ruined as I can’t sing _ but we enjoyed it all the same. So no surprise that I would thoroughly recommend the resort if you are looking for place to escape and relax, to meet lovely people and to be made to feel welcome from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave.

An unforgettable stay We had the pleasure of spending two wonderful weeks at this beautiful resort. From the very beginning, we felt comfortable and well taken care of. Check-in was smooth, and even though we arrived very late, we were greeted with a prepared meal in our room. Our late check-out was also no problem at all — we were even allowed to keep our room until the afternoon. The resort itself is very natural and authentic, yet still beautifully maintained. Our room was spotless, designed in a charming rustic style with a modern bathroom. The beach is separated from the hotel by a road, but that’s absolutely no issue — security staff accompany you safely across. There are plenty of sunbeds and shaded spots available, which the staff gladly prepare for you. The beach and the sea are perfectly clean, and although there are several hotels along the beach, you still have your own quiet stretch of beach to enjoy. The absolute highlight of this hotel is the staff. Everyone is incredibly warm, helpful, and genuinely caring — it truly feels like being part of a small family. A special shoutout to Andrice, who made us smile every single day with her wonderful energy! We will definitely come back — thank you to the entire team for an unforgettable stay!
