Negril, Jamaica: Laid-Back Beach Town with Picturesque Sunsets, Snorkeling, and Cliff Diving

Located on Jamaica’s western coast, Negril is known for its white-sand beaches, dramatic rugged cliffs, and coral reefs lying just offshore in the Caribbean. Its underwater beauty makes the town a popular spot for scuba diving and snorkeling at Negril Marine Park, and anglers have found the sea filled with blue marlin, wahoo, and mahi-mahi. The city has a front-row seat to some of the world’s most beautiful sunsets, and people often climb to the top of waterfront cliffs just to watch. At Rick’s Cafe, which is listed in the book 1,000 Places To See Before You Die, groups congregate every night to watch the sun dip below the horizon; some brave adventurers even leap off the 35-foot cliffs into the water.

Often called "the capital of casual," Negril is best defined by its laid-back vibe, from the slow and steady rhythm of the indigenous reggae music to its unofficial uniform—swimsuits and flip-flops. Running along the town is Seven Mile Beach, a stretch of powdery, white-sand coastline that earned a spot on Frommer’s Best Beaches in the Caribbean list. The town center comprises a shopping mall and a craft market where visitors can pick up locally produced goods.

Lush jungle Portland vibes across from Negril beach I was surprised by the very lush jungle like feel of this property in the middle of Negril. The gardeners deserve an award. The stunning wood furniture and dining room built of wood made me feel like I was in a jungle lodge. Although I arrived in the middle of a downpour, I took the opportunity to take a nap on the bed on the porch of the room. The rooms were equipped with all the amenities needed for a nice stay. The food was authentically Jamaican (though a little light on the pepper, but I understand why), and the seasonal fresh fruit was enjoyed. The staff were awesome: friendly, professional, funny and efficient. As a Jamaican I also enjoyed the band that played through dinner as they played traditional and popular Jamaican classics.

A Quiet, Peaceful, Beautiful Hidden Gem! What a beautiful resort! This is a small, intimate resort, nestled away in a lush, tropical area. The grounds are beautiful! It's never crowded, as there are only about 80 rooms. As a result, there are never any lines waiting to get into a restaurant, and you never have to rush down to the beach or pool at 7 in the morning to grab a lounge chair. In fact, upon arriving at the beach, a staff member will greet you, ask where you prefer to sit, and then bring you your chairs and towels! The staff couldn't have been more friendly or helpful. They couldn't do enough for us! While there are only three restaurants, there were plenty of options, and the food was excellent. The dinner buffet featured a different "theme" each night. The Chef's Table, offered only a couple nights per week, featured a gourmet chef and his assistants, who prepared their own individual specialties. You never knew what the menu was in advance, but everything was delectable! A true gourmet meal! (I highly recommend you make reservations a few weeks in advance.) The beach is pristine! The water is 5 shades of turquoise, and is calm as a lake. No waves, no algae, no shells! You can walk out a hundred yards and the water will only come up to your chest, and you can still see right to the bottom! The staff will take your food and drink orders, and bring your choices right to your beach chair. There is only one pool, but it's gorgeous! A lagoon type, with a swim up bar. (of course!) The rooms are a little dated, and can use upgrading, but they're very clean. The bed was comfortable, and the shower had excellent water pressure. Each room had it's own A/C control, and it worked perfectly. (Nice and cold!) There is a small deck that looks out over the beautiful trees and foliage. The entire atmosphere was calm, peaceful and quiet. A perfect place to just chill! If you're looking for a place to "let loose", with a lot of loud music, games by the pool, loud shows and night life, this is NOT the place for you. But if what you seek is a relaxing, calm, peaceful, quiet oasis, away from the pounding of the senses, come to the Sunset At The Palms immediately, if not sooner!

Much needed get away at wonderful resort! We really enjoyed our time at SATP! It was wonderfully relaxing, and tranquil. Loved the privacy of our own bungalow. It did rain a fair amount unfortunately and it was a bit disappointing to not be able to access the beach after 7pm. The resort was lovely and staff amazing!!
