Negril, Jamaica: Laid-Back Beach Town with Picturesque Sunsets, Snorkeling, and Cliff Diving

Located on Jamaica’s western coast, Negril is known for its white-sand beaches, dramatic rugged cliffs, and coral reefs lying just offshore in the Caribbean. Its underwater beauty makes the town a popular spot for scuba diving and snorkeling at Negril Marine Park, and anglers have found the sea filled with blue marlin, wahoo, and mahi-mahi. The city has a front-row seat to some of the world’s most beautiful sunsets, and people often climb to the top of waterfront cliffs just to watch. At Rick’s Cafe, which is listed in the book 1,000 Places To See Before You Die, groups congregate every night to watch the sun dip below the horizon; some brave adventurers even leap off the 35-foot cliffs into the water.

Often called "the capital of casual," Negril is best defined by its laid-back vibe, from the slow and steady rhythm of the indigenous reggae music to its unofficial uniform—swimsuits and flip-flops. Running along the town is Seven Mile Beach, a stretch of powdery, white-sand coastline that earned a spot on Frommer’s Best Beaches in the Caribbean list. The town center comprises a shopping mall and a craft market where visitors can pick up locally produced goods.

Sunset at the Palms – Negril, Jamaica ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (10/10 – Would absolutely return) My partner and I needed to get away. No agenda, just good food, good drinks, and somewhere that didn’t feel like every other resort. Sunset at the Palms checked every box. Six days there and honestly, we’re already talking about going back. The Setup: You’re staying in bungalows tucked into what feels like a jungle. Open up three sides of the room at night and you just hear… Jamaica. It’s peaceful in a way that’s hard to describe. Bed was comfortable, pillows were solid, and the shower—waterfall style with a wand—was better than expected. The Beach: Quick walk across the road and you’re on one of the nicest private beaches I’ve come across. White sand, calm water most days, waves when it got windy if you wanted to play around a bit. Palapas for shade, good recliners, a beach bar with decent food. We were out there every morning swimming in the ocean and spent the majority of our trip right on that sand. You can walk down the beach and grab trinkets from local vendors too. The Food: I’ll admit, we were skeptical about the buffet going in. Got there and realized we should’ve hit it way more often. Solid mix of local Jamaican dishes and familiar stuff if that’s more your speed. Nothing pretentious, just well-prepared food. The Spa: We did two couples massages in their outdoor private cabanas. The deep tissue was legitimately one of the best I’ve had, and I’ve had plenty over the years. Great way to decompress mid-trip. The Staff: This is the difference-maker. Everyone there treats you like you matter. Bring cash for tips—we probably went through $500 over six days between drinks and various requests. A buck or two here and there adds up, but the service you get in return is worth it. The Vibe: Adults only, maybe 85 units total, so it’s not crowded. The crowd is couples, generally our age range—not too young, not too old. People were friendly at the bars without being in your face about it. Speaking of bars: pool bar (great pool, by the way), martini bar, and the beach bar. We’d swim in the morning, hit the pool in the afternoon, clean up, grab dinner, and wind down with drinks. Easy rhythm to fall into. The property has a cool look to it—been around a while but maintained well. All the bathrooms are updated, even the public ones. Logistics: They have safe, newer taxis on-site if you want to explore Negril. No ATM at the resort but a short ride to one at a nearby property. Don’t walk on the main road—cars fly. Stick to the beach. We were a little concerned about hurricane damage before the trip, but Negril came through fine. Minor Gripes: Could use more storage in the bungalows—not a ton of room for clothes—and a few extra hooks for towels wouldn’t hurt. They’re also pretty conservative with towel handouts. Not a dealbreaker, just something to know. Bottom Line: If you’re looking to unplug somewhere romantic with great service, solid food, and a beach that actually delivers, this is the spot. We had a great time.

Jamaican hospitality + low key resort = A perfect, relaxing vacation Just got back from a week at Sunset At the Palms and had a fantastic visit. Honestly, I am not the type of person who likes going to the same place twice but I’m pretty sure I’ll be back! The people who work here are SO SO special and really make you feel welcome and as if you’re part of a family. The rooms are lovely (sure, there were a few scruffy ends but mostly, they were well appointed and nice). Especially loved the little balcony with the day bed. The housekeeper who does the daily towel art always put a smile on my face when I would see their latest creation. The grounds are gorgeous and are well taken care of by several gardeners (shout out to Jacob!). I’ve heard from other repeat guests that a lot was lost in the hurricane and what we saw was about 25% less than what’s typical but it was still stunning. You get your own little tree top “cottages” for lack of a better word. Yes, we were by the road and it was a tad bit noisy, but at night with all the birds and frogs and other creatures making their sounds, the traffic noise really doesn’t affect you much. The bed was comfy. My one complaint are the pillows, that were kind of lumpy and hard. I’ll just bring my own next time - lol. The hotel itself is beautiful. Not sure who the architect is but it has a lot of East Asian elements to it and was very well designed. There’s a lovely pool with a pool bar but we spent most of our time at the beach. It’s an all inclusive so the food is fine. There are a couple of options: The chef’s showcase (3x a week) The lotus leaf (3-4 times a week) Daily buffet with rotating themes (and variations of really the same food more or less so that can get boring) Beach bar (daily till about 5pm) Pool bar (Th-Sn till about 5) Blue Mountain Coffee bar (opens at 7am) The chef’s showcase was so fun - it’s where you meet 3 of the young chefs behind that evening’s meal (set 4 course menu). There are two seatings when it is on. The lotus is a la carte and was also great - both are a step up from the daily buffet, which is honestly fine. It’s not the best food in the world but it’s good and the country is still recovering from a hurricane so there are a lot of food shortages. The breakfast buffet was excellent and the omelet station was my favorite (shout out to Margaret and Kayla!). And there were so many other wonderful people there - Jason (an absolute riot), Tschawna (I’m def. misspelling her name), Christina, Andre and so many others whose names I am forgetting (so sorry!) There are also several bars but my favorite was what i think was the Martini Bar (the one by the piano). Shout out to Cash, Nadine, Gerald and of course Cornelius who mixed up fabulous drinks (went for the classics rather than some of the options on the menu!). But the biggest praise goes to Paul at the piano who kept us entertained with stories and song on several nights (there are a lot of games there too as well as books for you to pick up). To get to the beach, you do have to cross a street but there are two guards to stop traffic and it’s actually a nice kind of separation. The beach was gorgeous - crystal clear water that is shallow and the perfect temperature. The beach had a couple of life guards who also help set up your chairs, get your floaties etc. You get a red flag that you put up if you want bar service. I am totally forgetting the names of the two guys who were there (Christmas socks and hat guy - who is also Nadine’s brother!) were fabulous. Next door is a wonderful place called Office by Nature where Donovan plays live music every day (he also serenades you at the beach). This is not part of the hotel but next door and worth a visit (food takes a while but is really good). KK is the wonderful bartender there. At the beach, you can get paddle boards, canoes etc at no cost for 45m at a time (just have to sign a waiver). The beach is for guests only but people from other hotels will walk by as will vendors but they mostly leave you alone. Compared to the hotels next door, this was paradise! Not crowded, well maintained etc. The bathrooms are the cleanest beach bathrooms I’ve ever been to. What else? Oh the spa! You cannot miss the spa. Brenda has magic hands (not that I’d know as my husband had her twice! But I had Devina who was also lovely). We had the massages on our second and second last day there - perfection (it was outdoors with light muslin curtains for privacy but that also let the breeze in). Totally worth what you pay for. I wish I could remember more peolpe’s names b/c they really made this place. The concierge was a little uneven in terms of service and advice of what to do near by; there were two young women who were stand outs and I’m totally blanking on names. Overall, we had a fabulous time. This is a special place. It’s best for those looking for a low key and relaxing vacation. If you’re looking for a lot of action, entertainment, and variety, then this is probably not the place for you. We made a lot of friends among the guests (many of whom have been coming here for years) but also with the staff who really are a special lot. This was Jamaican hospitality at its best. Highly recommend.

Not worth it This Hotel shows as a 4.5 stars in Expedía and #3 of 43 in Viator .. I would not rated over 3 stars , The beach n grounds are nice but the place it’s falling apart. . ( Rusted n dripped painted ) ..The menu .. The Menu is mediocre ( Basic at its best) .. I Paid almost 1000$ a night stayed 4 days .. you are basically stuck with Pork ,Chicken , Burgers , Shrimps n some fish . . At night you may get lucky at the Cheff showcase
