Mendocino Coast, California: Small Towns Along Scenic Oceanfront and Redwood Forests

Northern California’s Mendocino Coast is a region of tiny towns and art colonies with varied terrain. Within a few minutes of one another are sunlit valleys, fertile vineyards, rocky headlands blanketed by fog, and serene forests of old-growth redwoods. The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens showcase the area’s geographical diversity through prickly succulents and colorful blooms stretching to the ocean.

Partially because of its scenic land and sea scapes, the coast is popular with painters, who gather in artists’ collectives such as the Mendocino Art Center. Visitors can see the land that inspires local artwork by heading to any of the region’s coastal state parks. At Mendocino Headlands State Park, waves crash into grottos and stony bluffs, and MacKerricher State Park has dramatic sand dunes.

This was the cleanest motel/hotel/lodge room I have EVER stayed in. The view was awesome, the bed was comfortable and the hotel staff friendly. The vouchers for the free bike rentals was a very nice surprise. It was a wonderful stay, and I will absolutely return.

Great place to stay near/on the beach So I got the last room for my time period. Unfortunately it had a great view of the parking lot. Funny enough it was quiet and did not have any real distractions/noise from the other guests or their cars. Checkin was quick and easy. Room was easy to get into. Just realize you open one door to the building (I was looking for the room number), then open your actual room. Room was good. Location is great. You can walk right out to the paved beach path. Turn left to the walking bridge, right to keep going... Great views for sunset. Just don't forget to get food as the town closes up early. Would stay here again - but try to book ahead for the beach view rooms.

Great customer service, great location! Rock and Joseph, the front desk managers who were working on different days of my stay, were each a delight, and they made my 5 night stay at Surf and Sand Lodge even more enjoyable. They were gracious and fun and seemed to genuinely enjoy their jobs. My dog Mimi and I both enjoyed our interactions with them, as well as the very helpful and kind night manager at their sister property (Beachcomber Inn) when I embarrassingly locked us out of our room late one night. The woman from the housekeeping department who was working on my last morning really impressed me, as well. Even though I'd seen on the news that heavy rain was expected, I'd inadvertently left my beach towels draped over the chairs on my balcony over night, and as I was packing up to go home, they were sopping wet. She really helped me out by letting me have a trash bag to put my beach towels in, which saved my car. These are the kinds of customer service qualities which make great employees and keep me coming back to both Surf and Sand Lodge and the Beachcomber Inn year after year!

Excellent Place to Stay Beautiful, comfortable, spacious room with deck on the second floor overlooking the shore and ocean. Only stairs available to get to the second floor. So nice to hear the ocean all night. (We kept the patio door open.) No breakfast on site. I brought food to our room, (nice little table by the patio door), and we enjoyed breakfast overlooking the ocean. We loved staying there and we would stay there again when in Ft. Bragg.
