Hotel at a Glance: Tarrytown House Estate

Tarrytown sits just 25 miles north of Manhattan in the Hudson River Valley. It’s here you’ll find the Tarrytown House Estate, a luxe historical property spread out over 26 beautifully maintained acres, a setting once used for dinner parties of the Manhattan elite. This winner of a 2014 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence features a pair of 19th-century mansions, plus a carriage house, a cottage, and a contemporary hotel.

  • Where you’ll stay: Though the estate is more than 150 years old, the guest rooms feature today’s amenities, with LCD TVs and free WiFi access.
  • Upscale tavern: Enjoy veal chops, juicy burgers, and small-production wines at the onsite Cellar 49, located in the mansion’s original cellar.
  • Take a dip in the indoor or outdoor pools, relax in the whirlpool, or sweat it out in the sauna.
  • Stay in shape: The estate has its own racquetball court and fitness center.
  • Driving time from Central Park: 35 minutes

Hudson River Valley, New York: Roosevelts, Robber Barons, and Sleepy Hollow

New York’s Hudson Valley begins just north of Manhattan, winding upward along the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers all the way to northern Westchester County. The valley was once home to the Roosevelts and Vanderbilts, each of whom built estates in Hyde Park, just north of Poughkeepsie.

Sitting along the banks of the Hudson River just 25 miles north of Midtown Manhattan, Tarrytown was named one of America’s Prettiest Towns by Forbes magazine. In the days when it was a retreat for the well-to-do, Tarrytown was the home of railroad tycoon and robber baron Jay Gould. His Lyndhurst estate, a Gothic Revival country house, is today open to the public for tours.

For another taste of history, head north to the village of Sleepy Hollow, the setting for Washington Irving’s classic story. Irving is buried in the cemetery here, along with Andrew Carnegie, Walter P. Chrysler, and Brooke Astor, among others.

Nice and clean hotel, friendly workers. Our room wasn't ready but they had complimentary sangria by the pool. Indoor pool is small but adequate, and outdoor pool was crowded. We went during July 4th weekend on a Groupon deal. Was worth it Restaurant on premise is a must go. Delicious! :-)
