Lake Geneva, Wisconsin: Lakeside Mansions and Historical Museums

Located within 90 miles of Chicago, Milwaukee, and Madison, Lake Geneva has become one of the Midwest’s most popular destinations for recreation. Geneva Lake—a gaping gulf of fresh water ripe for swimming, leisurely sails, water skiing, and tubing—is the resort town’s biggest draw in the summer. Admire the scenery by taking a stroll on the Geneva Lake Shore Path, a 21-mile walkway planned by early settlers that stretches around the entire lake. Along the way, you’ll pass expansive gardens and the opulent estates that helped the town earn the nickname “Newport of the West.”

In the winter, outdoor activities range from sledding and cross-country skiing in Big Foot Beach State Park to ice-fishing on Geneva Lake. There's also plenty to do indoors, such as the Geneva Lake Museum, which takes visitors back in time with re-created late 19th- and early 20th-century shops.

My husband and I needed to get away for the evening and stayed at the Abby on July 19th. I haven't been there in probably 20 years and it the rooms definitely look the same. For the prices they demand, the rooms are far from quality. Our room had a curbless shower, where the shower head faced straight towards the shower curtain, so all the water puddled around the bathroom floor and behind the toilet. It was laughable how poorly this was designed. We booked a harbor view room, and when we arrived, that room was not available. They booked us into a pool view room and gave us a discount. However, not only was the room we booked unavailable, but the room they gave us was not ready until 7 pm. (check in was at 4pm). Yes, they did discount our room, but when we asked for a late checkout because they were 3 hours behind in getting us our room, they would not give that to us. My total discounted price for this crappy room was $330. The restaurant we stopped at while we waited for our room was beyond average. Calamari was disgusting, and nachos were very average. I can't imagine ever staying here again. If you choose to stay here, you're staying for the location, not the amenities. Overall, I'm disappointed with our treatment and the facility as a whole; its not worth the price. As you can see the picture of our view our of our room was terrible, even though they discounted our room I think I was more upset they wouldn't give us the late checkout after delaying us 3 hours the night before. If you choose to stay there, don't expect much and expect to pay top dollar.

Terrible! This place is an absolute joke. Definitely not a resort type of feel. More like a crusty, musty motel of feel. We paid a ridiculous amount for two nights thinking it was a high end resort. Nope! Stay away.

Pathetic Very dated hotel that overcharges because it is near the lake. It was the worst $400 we have ever spent on a hotel room. The door did not close, there was not a blow dryer in the room, and we were going to a wedding, it was musty, couldn’t use the porch or open yep the curtains as our room was and porch/sitting outside area was right next to the main entrance to our building. The resort fee included Internet which was very unreliable. The front desk staff upon check-in was very nice. However, outside of that, I really don’t have anything positive to say about this hotel.
