Lake Geneva, Wisconsin: Lakeside Mansions and Historical Museums

Located within 90 miles of Chicago, Milwaukee, and Madison, Lake Geneva has become one of the Midwest’s most popular destinations for recreation. Geneva Lake—a gaping gulf of fresh water ripe for swimming, leisurely sails, water skiing, and tubing—is the resort town’s biggest draw in the summer. Admire the scenery by taking a stroll on the Geneva Lake Shore Path, a 21-mile walkway planned by early settlers that stretches around the entire lake. Along the way, you’ll pass expansive gardens and the opulent estates that helped the town earn the nickname “Newport of the West.”

In the winter, outdoor activities range from sledding and cross-country skiing in Big Foot Beach State Park to ice-fishing on Geneva Lake. There's also plenty to do indoors, such as the Geneva Lake Museum, which takes visitors back in time with re-created late 19th- and early 20th-century shops.

The Perfect Wedding & Stay at the Abbey Resort! My daughter and son-in-law were married at The Abbey Resort in Fontana, WI in May, and The Abbey Resort and staff was exceptional from the first day the resort Manager provided us with a tour until the last dance of the evening. The staff, the wedding planning and how organized "everything" was truly showed the years of experience they have in working with families to host the perfect event. The best part in my opinion is that you have everything at your fingertips in 1 location: the service, rooms, food / beverage and all the other establishments and activities around Lake Geneva. My daughter was married outside by a gazebo right in front of the Abbey's private harbor and it was beautiful! The other great thing about the Abbey is that they offered many options including room size, banquet hall size, and multiple food and beverage packages for any budget. After the wedding our family talked about what we would have changed or done differently, and we couldn't come up with anything. We owe this all to the staff, the accommodations and I highly recommend!

Would NOT recommend We checked in for a 2 night stay, upon arrival it was a bit late, but the front desk was nice. Walking into our room there was an extremely musty smell which we just left the back door open to try to air it out. It helped some, but the smell is still there. We stayed in villa 6 and It is quite dated inside. The under sink cabinet fell off when I opened it. In the bathroom there were only 4 towels and 2 washcloths when we have 6 total family members which was on our reservation. No big deal, we got more towels, but it is a bit annoying. There was a serious lack of hot water! I had it all the way on hot and it wasn’t hot enough for me. Again we have 6 people for one bathroom so that was not ideal with the hot water situation. The king bed was nice however they must have run out of fitted sheets because it was just a flat sheet tucked under. Again, not a big deal but makes it seem cheap. We ate at both restaurants, both of which had extremely slow wait staff (it was not busy) and the food was not good at all. The kids Mac and cheese came out cold, they forgot the kids sides and was just overall lacking quality. We unfortunately had not great weather so we took the kids to the indoor pool. We always look forward to a hot tub and theirs was broken which was such a disappointment. The only plus side was the beautiful view from our room. We love the town, but will not be back to the Abbey Resort.

The Abbey again The grounds are lovely we had a harbor view. The staff is very friendly. I will say even though the rooms had been recently renovated the lighting especially in the bathroom is very poor, the sink took quite awhile to warm up and the shower head was not good. The mattress on one of the beds was worn so you rolled to the side. Our outside balcony had crumbling cement pavers. As far as common areas, there are plenty indoor spaces but the furniture is dirty and stained or had very worn cushions. They need a complete refresh on those areas. We are at both restaurants 240west for breakfast and honestly it was not as good as in the past but the service was great and the staff was very friendly. In the waterfront the staff was great especially Kelly the bartender she was super friendly and professional. I do wish they had pizza on the menu sometimes You just want to split a pizza. We will still return and hope improvements are still ongoing the outdoor areas are so pretty and well maintained.
