Manhattan’s Upper West Side: Tony Residential Neighborhood with 19th-Century Townhouses and Waterfront Parks

Set between Central Park and the Hudson River, the Upper West Side is one of the toniest neighborhoods in New York City. Classic brownstones and prewar buildings line streets that are recognizable from innumerable movies and television shows, including Seinfeld, Sex and the City, and Woody Allen’s Hannah and Her Sisters. The neighborhood is a favorite address of the rich and famous—the Ansonia building, to take just one example, has been called home by everybody from Babe Ruth to Angelina Jolie.

Carousels, bike paths, and manmade lakes fill the iconic, 843-acre Central Park, which you can access via the entrance at 72nd Street. For a quieter alternative, head west to Riverside Park, where you’ll find beautiful flower gardens and waterfront picnic spots. Nearby, you can duck indoors at the American Museum of Natural History, where you can stroll past lifelike dioramas, a full-size model of a blue whale, and a Tyrannosaurus rex made up of fossils up to 65 million years old. Another classic New York institution is just southwest of here: Lincoln Center, home to the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic.

This hotel is great in many ways, location, service, and atmosphere just to name a few. I would recommend and will definitely be back.

Never ever again Didn't accept my credit card but it was workingevery where else. Even as the hotel cost were paid beforehand they threw us out after two days because there was no accept to pay the tax in any other way. Very unsatisfied experience. The management did follow "Hotel policy" and I had to search for new Hotel last day. Never ever again

Great location, not great service. Great location but always bad service experience with inattentive staff. Also build in a long time to get to/from your room because one of the elevators is always out of service. Have stayed at least 4-5 times and now looking for a new hotel in this awesome neighborhood.

Terrible. Stay somewhere else. Terrible experience. Never again. Hot water was luke warm. Front desk was incompetent and rude. And there is a 'urban fee' aka resort fee of $39 tacked on the bill at checkout for the free wi-fi. You have to pay it, no choice. Ridiculous. On check-in front desk was rude to my husband who I had added to the reservation (like out of the blue rude), said he wasn't on the reservation when he was, gave him a lot of attitude. Took a 10 min phone call to resolve where I was put on hold for minutes and minutes while I was trying to navigate the streets of NY to park the car. On check out we left our luggage for the hotel to hold, bell hop asked for our room number, when we came to pick up the luggage the front desk was mad at us because we had no claim tag -- right, not our fault, we were not given one but the front desk didn't seem to care, they were still nasty to us about it. Reported the luke warm water for the shower - cold to be honest. Front desk didn't bat an eye when we told them hot water was an issue so likely a common problem. Look at other reviews, they also mention the rude front desk staff. Location was great but there are some other much, much better choices to stay on the upper west side so stay at a different hotel. Do not stay at the Arthouse. Oh, and I emailed their general manager and received no response. So yeh, they don't care. So spend your money at a different hotel that does care and where you will feel like you are not a doormat to trip over - there is the Belleclaire literally across the street that gives you a voucher for breakfast and the front desk is so nice, the Lucerne is just a few blocks up and is excellent and the Beacon Hotel is not too far away and also great.
