Manhattan’s Upper West Side: Tony Residential Neighborhood with 19th-Century Townhouses and Waterfront Parks

Set between Central Park and the Hudson River, the Upper West Side is one of the toniest neighborhoods in New York City. Classic brownstones and prewar buildings line streets that are recognizable from innumerable movies and television shows, including Seinfeld, Sex and the City, and Woody Allen’s Hannah and Her Sisters. The neighborhood is a favorite address of the rich and famous—the Ansonia building, to take just one example, has been called home by everybody from Babe Ruth to Angelina Jolie.

Carousels, bike paths, and manmade lakes fill the iconic, 843-acre Central Park, which you can access via the entrance at 72nd Street. For a quieter alternative, head west to Riverside Park, where you’ll find beautiful flower gardens and waterfront picnic spots. Nearby, you can duck indoors at the American Museum of Natural History, where you can stroll past lifelike dioramas, a full-size model of a blue whale, and a Tyrannosaurus rex made up of fossils up to 65 million years old. Another classic New York institution is just southwest of here: Lincoln Center, home to the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic.

A Place of Comfort and Rest in NYC A lovely boutique hotel with very welcoming staff and comfortable rooms. We found the lobby rooms to be unique and welcoming. Morning coffee/tea and pastries are a delight! The room was clean and quiet with a lovely view. A peaceful stay in the city.

Will not be returning to this hotel I would have to agree with those reviewers who warned against staying at this hotel. While I experienced the staff (and especially the cleaning staff) to be very kind and helpful, they couldn't make up for structural issues with this hotel and its poor management. For my room, I paid more than 400USD per night, and got the experience of a sad, tired budget hotel with minimal amenities. It seems that a large number (perhaps a majority?) of their rooms have very little natural light and look at another building's wall. The room I was first assigned was so small I couldn't open my suitcase nor hang my clothes, and it had two windows which were both just a few meters away from a brick wall. If you care about your accommodation, this is the kind of room that can completely ruin your stay in NYC. When I complained, a kind receptionist said they only had one other room with any kind of natural light (the room change was for an extra fee, of course). While I was staying at the hotel, I overheard two more people at the reception complaining about their rooms; in their case they had apparently paid for larger and more expensive rooms but got a 'downgrade' when they checked in. Even after I moved to a more expensive room, it was simply ugly: no decoration at all and ugly, low quality furniture organized without much logic. I was told that breakfast was included in my price - but there is no breakfast to speak of in this hotel. It's a small café where you can only order plain black coffee (no latte or cappuccino!) and a croissant, sometimes bagel if you're lucky and they haven't run out, and that's it. A word of warning: when you check out and ask them to help you organize a taxi to an airport, they will try to push their own car service, with a flat rate at least 20-30USD over what yellow cabs will charge. There were some positive sides: location and, as I said, lovely cleaning staff who kept the room in a very good and clean condition. But it is outrageous that a hotel with such low standards can pass for 4 stars and keep charging this rate. If you want to stay in this amazing area of NYC, explore nearby hotels like Lucerne or Belleclaire, and give Arthouse a big fat pass.

Lovely stay I’d love to repeat This lovely hotel is a solid 8 out of 10. The upper West side is my favorite neighborhood when I visit, so I’ve stayed at Hotel Belleclaire, the beacon, the Wallace, Lucerne, and now art house. With the Wallace being by far the best, pretty much a 10 out of 10, I would say this lovely hotel has a few factors that placed it in the top two or three for sure. The staff is unbeatable: friendly professional, always helpful. Vivek at the front desk is particularly magnificent! I love you, Vivek! This is an extremely clean hotel, the lobby is lovely and extra appreciated, there’s a little cozy café where you can get coffee without having to leave the building, or cocktails too, if that’s more your style. At night the really lovely lobby area also has live music. You really feel like you’re having g a NYC moment when you get out of the elevator at night and the lobby is lit so romantically in the live music is wafting through the air. For the price, and I say this as a person who surfs kayak and gets Google alerts regularly to find the cheapest stay on the upper west side, art house is usually among the most expensive with exception of the Wallace. The reason it’s an 8 out of 10 instead of a perfect score are a few really small issues that are almost not worth mentioning. It’s a very busy hotel and one of the elevators was down my entire stay. Kind of frustrating. You don’t really come to Manhattan to watch TV, but the television in my room had consistently sketchy reception, sometimes none at all, and a pretty small number of channels with a remote that looked and felt about 20 years old. For some weird reason the bathroom was just really dark even with all the lights on, and one of my automatic shades was broken. These are really small issues and I almost don’t want to mention them because everything else was just superb. If I get lucky and find another good discount like I did this time, I would definitely, eagerly come back. Of course, as other people mention on this site, it’s such a wonderful location, super close to the train and lovely restaurants and coffee shops. For emergencies, CVS is directly across the street as well! Thank you art house and again thank you Vivek! WHAT A WONDERFUL STAY!
