Costa Mesa, California: Art Galleries and Eclectic Shopping near Newport Beach
Costa Mesa in SoCal’s Orange County is known as the “City of the Arts” for its acclaimed art galleries and world-class Broadway performances. The New York Times called it “a cultural beacon", and it centers on the Segerstrom Center for the Arts (formerly the Orange County Performing Arts Center), a striking modern facility that houses several auditoriums. Among these are the Tony-Award-winning South Coast Repertory and the recently opened Henry and Renée Segerstrom Concert Hall, which has played host to the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Mariinsky Theater of St. Petersburg, Russia. You might be able to catch an award-winning musical here while you’re in town—_Chicago_ and Beauty and the Beast open in January—or an Alvin Ailey dance performance. Costa Mesa also offers shopping that rivals Rodeo Drive (which is located an hour north), as well as renowned sculpture gardens and several area golf courses.
There’s plenty of surf and sand within reach, too: SoCal’s most famous beaches, Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach, and Newport Beach all within a few miles. In Newport, you can body surf at The Wedge, a jetty renowned for its massive waves, and you’ll find pick-up volleyball games lining the sands of Huntington Beach.
