Park City, Utah: Historical Mining Town Turned Ski Mecca

Park City has humble roots as a mining town nestled in the Wasatch Range east of Salt Lake City. But in the past 30 years or so, the town has blossomed into an international skiing destination. That’s largely due to Park City Mountain Resort. Each winter, the mountain is blanketed with an average of 365 inches of snow, which means plenty of fresh powder across more than 100 ski runs and three terrain parks. In the warmer months, you can weave your way through groves of trees on miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails. The Alpine Coaster, which stays open year round, hurtles down the mountain at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour.

Back in town, Park City’s former saloons and boarding houses have given way to more than 100 independent boutiques, 30 art galleries, and 50 restaurants along Main Street. For about 10 days each January, Park City glams it up Hollywood style as the host of the Sundance Film Festival. When Sundance isn’t in town, you can catch a play, concert, or comedy show at the circa-1929 Egyptian Theatre.

Located on the main drag, the Park City Museum chronicles the town’s history with artifacts and interactive exhibits. In the eerie basement, you can check out the former territorial jail—a dim dungeon with stone walls and rusted leg irons. In the space between cells, Wanted posters depict the outlaws, murderers, and thieves who passed through the subterranean slammer.

Beware of Studio Rooms This review is for the “suites” portion of the resort, not the main building. 1.) Do not stay in the “Studio” rooms, they do not have enough closet space, have small pull down Murphy beds and small bathrooms. 2.) Our Room had the lowest end internet TV, did not have any network or subscription channels. 3.) Bathroom sink drain was stopped up. 4.) Murphy bed had blood stains on duvet cover. 5.) Kitchenette light did not work. 6.) Construction demolition work started at 8:00 each morning. They were breaking up an old concrete patio with a hydraulic hammer. The building shook. 7.) Regular entrance into building is closed so you have to walk through the parking lot to get to the building where suites are. Having said that, the main “hotel” side was nicer but had very standard rooms. We spent most of our time and money next door at Stein Eriksen.

Wonderful!! Far exceeded our expectations. The room was superb...every amenity you could imagine and very clean. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The pool was closed for renovations during our stay but that did not matter as the resort made up for it in every other way. I'm so glad we stayed here.

Exquisite! Staying at The Chateaux was truly a dream, and I am excited to plan my next visit! I come from the land of “Minnesota Nice” and I felt right at home with the kind staff of the resort. Our party had the pleasure of working with Michael, and he set us up with a perfect, worry-free, relaxing stay. The suite we stayed at far exceeded our expectations. The beds were very comfortable with plenty of pillows, and the rooms were spacious and clean. We were stocked with all of the essentials, and more, so I didn’t need to request a thing! You can truly tell that the staff is attentive to the finer details so that you can focus on your vacation! The breakfast was extraordinary, so be sure to include that as part of your stay! The menu would change slightly each day to keep things exciting and new, and I really appreciated the variety. The shuttle service was enjoyable, too! We got the opportunity to ride with Nick and Alex, and they were professional and helpful in getting us to our desired locations promptly. Thank you again, Michael, and the rest of the staff at The Chateaux, for orchestrating a wonderful stay, and making us feel that we are worthy of the finer things in life.
