Hotel at a Glance: The Cheshire

The Cheshire may have been built in the 1960s just outside St. Louis, but its half-timber façade and delicate flower gardens suggest a 16th-century English inn. It’s believed that the three-diamond inn’s founder drew inspiration from Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese––a 350-year-old London tavern. You can see touches of this influence, from complimentary tea served throughout the day to a British-style pub where you can drink a pint of ale.

  • European-inspired breakfast: Nibble fresh-baked croissants and sip tea during the complimentary breakfast.
  • Old-World elegance: Guest rooms are trimmed in period furnishings that recall the trends of the Tudor Revival. Before bed, enjoy complimentary chocolate made by a local company.
  • Enjoy classic American fare at Boundary, one of three onsite eateries.
  • Accolade: The Cheshire received AAA’s Three Diamond rating.
  • Nearby attractions: Saint Louis Zoo is less than a mile away, and downtown St. Louis is just 15 minutes away by car.

St. Louis, Missouri: Urban Park Space and Brewery Tours in the Gateway City

The first thing you notice about the St. Louis Gateway Arch is its height: at 630 feet, it’s the tallest manmade monument in the United States, and it dwarfs the other buildings of the St. Louis skyline. Less obvious is the fact that the Arch is exactly as tall as it is wide, stretching out along the banks of the Mississippi River. You can take a ride to the summit for a bird’s-eye view of the city’s skyline and riverboats riding the Mississippi. Make sure you get to the Arch before 10 a.m.; after that, the lines start to get long, and tickets sometimes sell out in the afternoon. A few miles down the river, you’ll find the headquarters of brewing giant Anheuser-Busch, which began producing there in 1852. On a tour through the red-brick brewery, you can sample beers and visit the stables where the company keeps its iconic clydesdale horses.

Nearby Forest Park’s more than 1,200 acres of green space are also worth a visit. Contained in this space is the Saint Louis Zoo, which corrals hundreds of species in several different habitats; it’s frequently cited as one of the best zoos in the country, and entrance is free.

Great hotel! Everyone was so nice, the rooms were in great shape, and the breakfast was much better than expected. The scavenger hunt was a blast as well.

Fading Back to Pre-renovation Standards I've stayed here several times over several decades. After the remodel, things were certainly updated, nicer, and attractive without losing the original vibe of the place. Now, it's becoming increasingly less clean, the staff is inattentive, and there are simple things they could do to get back up to speed. Things that were not clean included a whole lot of dust in my room. Dust along shelves because the cleaners might not be tall enough to do a thorough job. The coffee area in my room needed attention since it was obvious people had made a mess and it had never been cleaned up. There were urine spots on the toilet when we arrived and I couldn't wait for cleaners to return before needing the toilet. The breakfast was good, but I got attitude from the woman with the whimsical, sequin vest when I asked that the door to the outdoor patio be unlocked. My third morning, the outdoor seating hadn't been cleaned up the night before: tables were filthy, glassware was left behind, cigarette butts were left on chairs, and it was obvious no one prepared the area for morning. Consistently, there were two or three employees sitting on the bench outside the main entrance, some of them smoking. A simple walk through with cleaners would make the breakfast so much better, and the room, too.

I'll never go again I booked their party area for a family event, but I was shocked by how rude the staff were. Unlike other hotels where I've hosted family events, this restaurant's staff refused very reasonable requests, such as adjusting the lighting. I am deeply disappointed by their attitude and will never book this place for any event again.

Quaint, comfortable themed hotel This is a cute, comfortable themed hotel and for me, a real plus, they are dog friendly! Cordial employees from the check-in desk to the cleaning staff. There is a decent restaurant right next door and the neighborhood is pleasant. I will definitely stay agaidn.
