Boston’s Charlestown: Historic Waterfront Neighborhood on the Freedom Trail

Founded in 1628, Charlestown prides itself as being Boston’s oldest neighborhood. In fact, it was the first capital of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. You can experience a bit of the neighborhood’s colonial history along the 2.5-mile long Freedom Trail, which marches across the Charlestown Bridge to stop at two historic areas in this northerly neighborhood. The first is the USS Constitution, where Navy sailors run 30-minute guided tours of the 200-year-old ship’s spar deck, gun deck, and berth deck. The impressive vessel was nicknamed “Old Ironsides” after British cannonballs simply bounced off its hull during the War of 1812.

The northern terminus of the Freedom Trail, the Bunker Hill Monument, commemorates the Revolutionary War Battle of Bunker Hill with an obelisk reminiscent of the Washington Memorial. Follow the trail across the Charlestown Bridge (or hop on the MBTA orange line) to reach downtown Boston, where you can explore the Freedom Trail’s south end.

YMCA This is not a real hotel but a YMCA. There is a sign stating this in the lobby... in need of some place to stay quick, this will work. The room is a small, basic studio apartment. There is nothing around so be prepared to get/buy everything you need. Small kitchen to use but right now all equipment is by request. What cooking has to do with Covid I have no idea. Bare minimum of equipment given. Place could use new equipment like a mattress. Some minor damage like door bump guard partially pushed in to wall, refrigerator needed to be replaced and mattress split and open on side. This is visible by removing sheet. Other damage visible as well. See images... We stayed as there really was no other choice but would I do this again, no. Consider somewhere else.

One night I arrived from South station (~12 minute car ride) right after check in time. The man at the front desk was very polite and courteous. My room was ready on time. It had a mini fridge, microwave, and coffee besides the other essentials. The bathroom was tiny; I felt claustrophobic with the door closed. The TV remote did not work. The lights were very dim. Pretty much the entire hotel was very outdated. Paint was old and chipped and the carpet smelled. The walls were also paper thin. My neighbor’s children kept running up and down the hallway until security loudly had to yell at them at 2am. In the morning, checkout was easy and the kept my luggage for free. Overall, location was next to the Navy Yard and the staff was great. Unfortunately, the hotel itself needs some work.

Threatened by Manager Threatened by Manager...... I’m writing this complaint for a few reason in regard to the service I received checking out the hotel. 1. When I asked the manager when the hold on my card with be lifted and when I would receive my money back in my account. He said 7-10 business days. Quite honestly it is unacceptable to hold someone money for 7-10 business day. 2. When I was looking over my charges I noticed that I was charged 37.02 (20.00 nightly fee) and additional taxes. I told the manager that taxes were already paid thru Travelocity and showed him my bill from Travelocity. I only had to pay the 20.00 plus tax on the 20.00 (22.99). Please note that have stayed at this hotel frequently and for two days leading to my check-out. At no point was I charged 37.02 extra for my stay. I used the same website to book the room. So when I questioned all of this…the manager said and I quote “ It going to be that type of Day” and proceeded to threaten me and ask me if I wanted to take care of this outside around the corner. He told me that I did not understand the tax and would not explain it to me after I showed him the payment. I find it disturbing that one of the managers would threaten a guest in your hotel. I've reached out to the GM Ryan Hanratty and have not received a response
