Downtown Boston: Revolution-Era Landmarks and Modern Skyscrapers

Downtown Boston is home to one of the country’s wackiest city layouts. Its colonial-village lanes converge, split, and take hairpin turns, creating a maze of cobblestone that, though frustrating for drivers, makes for a fun walking experience. If you’re visiting for the first time, the best way to navigate the area is to follow the 2.5-mile-long Freedom Trail, which takes you past 16 historical landmarks, including Paul Revere's home, Old North Church (of “One if by land, two if by sea” fame), and Faneuil Hall. You can use Boston public transportation to explore the city if you tire of walking.

Since the area is also the city’s financial district, centuries-old fixtures share sidewalk space with modern 40-story office towers. You’ll find suit-clad professionals grabbing lunch on Washington Street, which is lined with street vendors and flower shops. Downtown is also where you’ll find several of the city’s quirkier neighborhoods, such as the Leather District. With its rustic warehouses, the neighborhood is the closest example of what the business center looked like in the 1800s.

Moxy is a Unique Brand (One I like) and in Boston a Great Location This was the first time I'd been to Boston, and I asked for advice from a few different A.I. sources about the best location for lodging. Several of those sources suggested that some of the Marriott properties (I have some status, so typically utilize their brands) toward the North End or Charlestown might be better located for a tourist. This was a great example of how A.I. is wrong more often than you'd think and than it should be. The location of The Moxy Downtown Boston is perfect in my opinion. It is only a short 3-5 minute walk to Boston Common and the great majority of the historical sites you want to visit are then right in that area within additional 2-5 minute walks in between. Even the furthest sites (only a few this far) are only a 20-25 minute walk. Boston is super walkable overall. The Moxy itself is a unique brand for Marriott and one that I like quite a bit, but you want to make sure it fits your personality. The rooms are very small - intentionally. The premise is that you will spend most of your time in the public areas which are designed for social gatherings, group work, meeting your fellow travelers, etc. Although the rooms are small they are decorated very uniquely, and they are comfortable. I've stayed at a few Moxy properties and they are all similar to this, and the rooms are nearly identical whether in the midwest, the east, or even in Europe. I know some locations (not sure of the Boston site) have bunk bed options for kids or young-at-heart adults. Very modern, stylish and comfortable. If your style is more of the larger suites you might find in the upscale brands of Marriott then a Moxy may not be for you. I would venture to guess that if you're under 45 years old you'd like this brand. My only complaint about this particular location on the particular dates I was staying is that they seemed to be out of a lot of inventory; lots of menu items were not offered, most of their wine options weren't available, and I heard the bartenders informing many patrons that they were out of this or that booze and had to substitute. That's not the end of the world, but also is not what you would expect from a Marriott property. In a city as big as Boston a delivery of inventory should not have been delayed for over 4 days (my length of stay.) Overall though I would definitely stay at The Moxy Boston Downtown again, and likely at any Moxy location I see in a destination I'm headed to.
