Hotel at a Glance: The Donatello

The Donatello is located just a block from San Francisco's Union Square, but it shares more of a spiritual connection with Florence, Italy. In a nod to its Renaissance-era namesake, the hotel bursts with Italian accents, from the artwork on the walls to the Venetian glass décor. To cap it off, the restaurant serves dishes that would fit in Bologna or Milan.

  • Recently renovated guest studios combine elegance with modern touches.
  • In-room amenities: Wet bar, microwave, and mini-fridge.
  • Dining: Zingari Ristorante offers northern Italian cuisine in a charming European atmosphere.
  • Long day? Relax in the sauna, or a get in a workout on the top-floor fitness center.

San Francisco’s Union Square: Luxury Shopping District with Broadway Shows

Union Square is where San Franciscans go to find their coolest threads. The Square, which has grown to include several surrounding blocks, houses one of the country’s densest concentrations of department stores and upscale boutiques. It’s conveniently located in the heart of downtown, accessible via the Powell Street cable car.

Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Macy’s anchor its namesake plaza, and a new Bloomingdale’s was recently installed at the Westfield San Francisco Centre. There are smaller boutiques and independent clothiers here as well—you’ll find them tucked away on narrow alleyways. Sift through vintage books at family-owned antique shops, or admire iconic French fashion labels on the pedestrian-only Maiden Lane.

Union Square is also famous for its eclectic arts scene. The American Conservatory Theater produces Tony Award–winning dramas and comedies in a gorgeous Beaux-Arts building. And a handful of art galleries and museums—most notably the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art—display renowned works from artists such as Henri Matisse, Andy Warhol, and Edward Hopper.

A sofa bed is not a bed Not only is the first time that I have been told to do my own bed in a hotel but also this was not even a bed, it was a small sofa bed, also the received treatment was totally unrespectfull. I strongly do not recommend making any kind of reservation hear

I felt like I was kicked out the door Until my final morning, I would have given the Donatello five stars in every regard, hands down. That changed. The problem I encountered was at check-out. They have a 10am check-out time, which is a little early, but definitely not ridiculous. However, many might expect it to be the more standard 11am, as I did. I would suggest they explicitly let guests know, verbally, about the check-out time upon check-in. I did realize early that morning that check-out was 10am. I packed, made a pretty quick trip to their fitness center, and returned to my room no later than 9:50, just enough time to take a quick shower and zip my suitcase. I was already locked out of my room at 9:50: my key card no longer worked. So I had to go down to the lobby, where I was met by attitude and noticeably curt behavior from a previously friendly desk attendant. She had to make a a new room key. I made it back to my room by 9:58, trying my best to hurry. (Of course, it still was before check-out time). At 10:02, housekeeping knocked on my door to get in, even though I had the "do not disturb" marker on the door. In the end I checked out by 10:15. A 15 minute grace period doesn't seem unreasonable. Of course, I would have checked out just on time had I not been locked out of my room. It was a stressful process and I must say left a bad taste in my mouth. Despire it being a really good stay until then, it was enough to make me not wish to stay there on my next trip to San Francisco.
