Hotel at a Glance: The Esmeralda Inn & Restaurant

The wooden floor in the lobby of the historic Esmeralda Inn & Restaurant holds a notable distinction: Patrick Swayze danced on it in Dirty Dancing. Established in 1891 and fully renovated in 1997, the inn received the floor as a donation. The property has always had a Hollywood connection: Clark Gable, Mary Pickford, and Gloria Swanson were regular guests here at one time, and several silent movies were filmed on site. Today, the beautifully restored building features an on-site spa tub, a huge stone patio out back, and luxe-rustic decor.

  • Start your day with a complimentary hot breakfast.
  • Take in the view: On the outdoor patio, you can see the Rocky Broad River, Hickory Nut Gorge, and Chimney Rock while you warm up next to a stone fireplace.
  • On-site restaurant: Dine on filet mignon, local trout, and Faroe Island salmon.
  • Hang out in the game room: You can shoot billiards or play board games while looking out over the mountains.
  • In-room amenities: Plush bathrobes, Bose Wave radios, and free WiFi

Lake Lure, North Carolina: Mountain Country near Chimney Rock and Asheville

Set in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Lake Lure might seem about as far from Hollywood as you can get. But this little mountain town has an impressive list of onscreen credits—The Last of the Mohicans, Firestarter, and Dirty Dancing were all filmed nearby. It’s not all that strange when you think about it. The area’s lush, towering mountains and dense forests make for a majestic background, whether you’re shooting a movie or taking a relaxing vacation.

The 1,500-acre Lake Lure, which National Geographic called “one of the most beautiful man-made lakes in the world,” attracts visitors year-round with its swimming, sunbathing, fishing, and boating opportunities. Overlooking the lake is Chimney Rock Park, where you can hike the trails or take an elevator ride up 26 stories to a mountaintop lookout point with sweeping views of the landscape. You’ll be less than a 30-minute drive from Asheville, an eclectic city with some of the most unique shops and restaurants in North Carolina.

This place is absolutely beautiful, cozy, and quaint! The staff was very welcoming and readily answered any questions I had. The breakfast was fantastic! The hot tub was very refreshing after a long day of hiking Chimney Rock. It rained the second day of our visit so we took advantage of the gameroom. It was well stocked with many things to do. Will definitely be returning in the future.

Thank you Chris! Back for our 8th year at our home away from home. Chris at the front desk was a particularly bright spot during our stay. Chris felt more like a really helpful friend than just another employee of the inn. We always tend to feel at home here, but cannot overstate how much more comfortable that Chris made our stay. Our room was nice (as usual), and everything was/felt extremely clean. We stayed on the second floor this year as opposed to the top floor. The difference is that you have porch access on the two second floor rooms. We stayed in the room facing the parking lot from the porch (room 1) and I would recommend specifically booking/requesting the room that overlooks Chimney Rock (room 2). Breakfast the next morning was one of the better breakfasts that we have had in our many stays. The muffins are always good, and this year was no exception. I think the major opportunity for this trip would be the spa. We share some blame in this year’s mishap, but it makes two years in a row that we have tried to enjoy the spa and were unable to.

$450/night? NOPE I really thought that the $450/night price tag would bring some country charm with it. It did not. The room looked like it housed a suicidal monk. Not only was it the size of a shoebox, the colors were dark and depressing. There wasn’t even a door to the bathroom. I repeat. THE BATHROOM HAD NO DOOR. Plus, there was no conditioner in the bathroom to counter the effects of the rust coining from the shower head. I think they got the price wrong by at least one zero. To add insult to injury, they left an ominous Traveler's Prayer in the bed. The ultimate irony is that they said they are NOT a money making institution. Neither Christ nor I believe them.

Old-fashioned, warm hospitality Our stay at the Inn was wonderful. I could feel my blood pressure dropping as we drove in to the parking lot. The Inn is very warm - lots of wood and log cabin-esque features. The grounds are small but stunning - beautiful fountains and sweet rock walks dipping into the adjacent mountain face. The windows in our rooms opened to the cool mountain air and had a BOSE speaker/music device. We enjoyed the breakfast each morning and the ample hot tub basin every evening. Finally, my friend and I each splurged on a two-hour massage and reflexology session. It was literally one of the best body work sessions of my life. The Inn's only drawback in my opinion? You have to get in your car to travel downtown safely, just a mile down the road.
