Walla Walla, Washington: Wine and Art in One of the Best Small Towns in America

July 29, 2022: The Walla Walla Valley was voted America’s Best Wine Region for an unprecedented third consecutive year. Unsurprisingly, "the town so nice they named it twice" won out in the "friendliest" category. The best way to get to know such a welcoming place might be to head to Main Street. There, you can admire public artworks and pop into antique shops and restaurants. There are more than 130 wineries in the area, most of which have their own tasting rooms.

There's sophisticated entertainment to match visitors' sophisticated palates, too. The Walla Walla Symphony is the longest-running symphony west of the Mississippi, and the Gesa Power House Theatre, once a gas plant, is now the preferred venue of Shakespeare Walla Walla theater company.

Thanks to Walla Walla's location near the Blue Mountains, there's plenty for outdoor enthusiasts as well. Cycling trails, some as long as 50 miles, run throughout the town. In the winter, they can head to Ski Bluewood's slopes, located a little more than an hour away from downtown.

Simply a place to spend the night A novel but functional room. It needs a table. The bed is very comfortable. Parking is a bit tight, forcing some to park on the street. There are no views. The room is designed for short-stay transient guests. "Service" was limited to brief interactions with the desk clerk who was less than charming but responsive. Location is somewhat remote from downtown central area of restaurants and pubs; also remote from Whitman College. You need a car or bike to get around. Altogether, a place to sleep. Not nearly as graceful as one of several good BnBs in the area.

Great place. Staying at The Finch was a complete joy. Our room was spacious and complete with large containers of Lotion, shampoo, conditioner and plenty of towels. Bed and pillows are great. One point I want to bring to this review is to communicate with staff, you text, at first I thought this is different, But it worked out beautifully, staff is quick to respond and get you what you need, pronto! Shout out to Jason at the front desk he is there for you, Friendly, funny and gracious. We will always stay at The Finch.
