Manhattan’s Lower East Side: Chic Boutiques, Restaurant Row, and Contemporary-Art Galleries

If you were a German, Irish, Polish, or Jewish immigrant coming to America in pursuit of a better life in the 19th or early 20th century, odds were good that you’d wind up sharing space in an overcrowded tenement building on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The neighborhood—one of the city’s oldest—was a refuge for New York’s newest and poorest residents for generations. You can learn more at the Tenement Museum, located in a five-story brick building that once housed some 7,000 working-class immigrants.

In recent years, the Lower East Side’s identity as a welcome mat for newcomers has shifted as gentrification began to reshape the neighborhood. Pushcarts and rundown storefronts have given way to trendy boutiques along Orchard Street and a chic “restaurant row” on Clinton Street. What’s more, the relocation of the New Museum has attracted a slew of contemporary-art galleries. Some of the old mainstays have stuck around, though, including Katz’s Delicatessen and Russ & Daughters, which has been selling premium smoked fish, bagels, and other specialty foods since 1914.

Good inexpensive hotel This is an inexpensive and well-maintained hotel in a great location on the border of the East Village, Lower East Side, and SoHo. If you are looking for a luxurious spa vacation, this isn’t the place—and that was great for me because I wasn’t. I wanted what I got: a helpful person at the desk, named Peter when I stayed; clean elevator; clean room, bed, and bathroom; functional air conditioning. Will definitely be returning when my travels take me back to New York City.

Very good The location of this hotel is really great! It’s in the heart of SoHo next to several great bars and shops. The shops down Broadway are just a 10-15 minute walk away. It’s very clean and the people at the front desk are very nice. Krystal stands out at the front desk! Very helpful and patient!

Small and Perfect !! This quaint little hotel in New York City was perfect for me, a solo traveler. The front desk had someone there at all times and they were very pleasant. They also had a wonderful room to the side with coffee, hot water where you could sit and relax before or after your day. The extras in the bathroom were organic and very nice. I want to point out that the air conditioning system worked perfectly, which enabled me to sleep very well. I would definitely come back to this hotel again.
