Chicago's River North: World-Class Art Galleries, Restaurants, and Nightlife near Downtown

Bordering the Loop on the northern side of the Chicago River, the River North neighborhood is where the skyscrapers of downtown give way to the award-winning restaurants and trendy nightspots of the North Side. Once an industrial area, River North is today home to architectural gems—the Jenga-like Contemporaine residential building on Wells Street is a good example—as well as eateries to suit every appetite and budget.

In addition to a formidable culinary presence ranging from inventive Peruvian cuisine at Tanta Restaurant to Chicago classics such as Portillo's, River North boasts the country's largest concentration of art galleries outside of Manhattan. The River North Gallery District runs along Chicago, Superior, and Huron Streets, occupying century-old red-brick warehouses that have been converted into lofts and exhibition spaces. You can easily travel beyond River North using Chicago's public transportation system; check out our guide to Chicago public transportation for tips on navigating the city like a local.

Nice Hotel Nice Hotel in a good Location. Room was bigger than expected. I had an issue with the AC which was in a way sorted but was too noisy to keep on for any length. Hotel was within walking distance of major attractions. Good selection of restaurants nearby.

A Go To When Staying Downtown We stayed for Halloween weekend 2025-This location is ideal and a reasonable walk to Gold Coast or river north, and very short walk to Mag mile. Short Ubers/taxi rides to almost anywhere if needed. Yasemi at the Godfrey was a charming spot for breakfast. The roof top was very much in the Halloween spirit and fun decor for our son to see (during brunch-before 3pm). The rooms are clean and spacious. The staff is very helpful, Edwin and Alex both were present to help us from check in through our last day. They were accommodating and efficient (essential when traveling with our son). Their level of service is the reason we’ll be coming back.

⭐☆☆☆☆ Terrible Experience — the Worst “4-Star” Hotel I’ve Ever Stayed In I’ve travelled extensively around the world and can honestly say that The Godfrey Hotel in Chicago is the worst four-star hotel I’ve ever stayed in. From start to finish, the experience has been shockingly poor. The staff are unfriendly, unhelpful, and at times outright rude. There’s no sense of hospitality or warmth — just indifference. The rooms themselves are cold (literally cold — the heating barely works), and despite advertising daily housekeeping, our room was never cleaned. We left the hotel at 9 a.m. and returned around 3 p.m. hoping to rest and recover from jet lag, only to find the room exactly as we’d left it: unmade bed, dirty towels, trash still in the bins. When we called reception to complain, the response was simply, “We’ll send someone now.” That meant we couldn’t rest, couldn’t nap, and our whole plan for the afternoon was ruined while we waited for someone to finally come clean. This hotel completely fails to deliver on even the most basic expectations of comfort or service. Save yourself the frustration — there are much better places in Chicago for the same or even less money. I would never stay here again and would strongly recommend others avoid it.
