Chicago's River North: World-Class Art Galleries, Restaurants, and Nightlife near Downtown

Bordering the Loop on the northern side of the Chicago River, the River North neighborhood is where the skyscrapers of downtown give way to the award-winning restaurants and trendy nightspots of the North Side. Once an industrial area, River North is today home to architectural gems—the Jenga-like Contemporaine residential building on Wells Street is a good example—as well as eateries to suit every appetite and budget.

In addition to a formidable culinary presence ranging from inventive Peruvian cuisine at Tanta Restaurant to Chicago classics such as Portillo's, River North boasts the country's largest concentration of art galleries outside of Manhattan. The River North Gallery District runs along Chicago, Superior, and Huron Streets, occupying century-old red-brick warehouses that have been converted into lofts and exhibition spaces. You can easily travel beyond River North using Chicago's public transportation system; check out our guide to Chicago public transportation for tips on navigating the city like a local.

Nice decor, staff and roof top bar Switched things up and picked this hotel for an anniversary retreat. We had car service to the hotel, so I can't say much about parking but they do have valet. Check in was smooth, the staff were very nice and professional. Remember, downtown Chicago has fees for hotels. There is a Mediterranean restaurant on site that is available for breakfast for purchase. We didn't visit it but the menu was simple but the smells coming from the kitchen were great. The roof top bar is on the 4th floor and has a seating area that leads to a bar that leads outside. The staff were nice and the food was excellent. I would definitely stay here again. The pics won't do the food, drink and atmosphere justice. We were very happy with the stay. The room doors weren't great at blocking out hallway sounds and the room kinda looked like it was work recently done. Definitely a nice room and there are several places nearby for food and personal needs.

Great service but sad I couldn't catch Squid Games l Clint was incredibly helpful during check-in! I would give five stars for that great service! But was disappointed there was no Netflix on TV. There was also no way to connect your computer or phone besides as a phone remote for their pay per view and cable. No microwave either.

10s across the board The Godfrey hotel was an excellent choice. The staff was amazing and responsive, spacious rooms that were clean, rooftop was really nice. During checkout, Clint, Valeria, and Hugo were phenomenal in their customer service! Clint was accommodating and extremely helpful with what my group needed. 10/10!
