Chicago's River North: World-Class Art Galleries, Restaurants, and Nightlife near Downtown

Bordering the Loop on the northern side of the Chicago River, the River North neighborhood is where the skyscrapers of downtown give way to the award-winning restaurants and trendy nightspots of the North Side. Once an industrial area, River North is today home to architectural gems—the Jenga-like Contemporaine residential building on Wells Street is a good example—as well as eateries to suit every appetite and budget.

In addition to a formidable culinary presence ranging from inventive Peruvian cuisine at Tanta Restaurant to Chicago classics such as Portillo's, River North boasts the country's largest concentration of art galleries outside of Manhattan. The River North Gallery District runs along Chicago, Superior, and Huron Streets, occupying century-old red-brick warehouses that have been converted into lofts and exhibition spaces. You can easily travel beyond River North using Chicago's public transportation system; check out our guide to Chicago public transportation for tips on navigating the city like a local.

LH and HU were AMAZING upon arrival. My initial experience at the Godfrey Hotel started with the enticing aroma upon entry. The lobby is decorated very stylish and the lobby bar/restaurant is quaint and inviting. Checking in I had the pleasure of meeting with LH and HU, both of these individuals greeted me with a smile and were extremely polite. They welcomed me to the Godfrey by informing me of the many amenities available, presented me with keys to my room and even provided suggestions of places to visit for lunch. They patiently answered all my questions and were extremely friendly and professional. They both presented themselves and the Godfrey with outstanding hospitality and customer service. They made traveling solo seamlessly easy and comforting. This location is absolutely perfect. Only a few blocks from Michigan Avenue for the shopping enthusiasts. The neighborhood is beautiful and has anything within walking distance that you could possibly want. I’ve traveled all over the world and this is absolutely the cleanest city I’ve ever visited. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Everyone is friendly and excited to share their city by offering suggestions for places to visit and providing directions. I plan to make visiting here an annual tradition as it has so much to offer for anyone. Don’t hesitate in booking the Godfrey, ask for LH and HU for a superb experience and tell them Stephanie sent you.

Never again We went for a wedding. A block of rooms were reserved for family and friends. We parked in the hotel parking garage. Someone on the hotel staff spilled an entire liquor cart in the elevator and it dripped on us as we were waiting for the elevator. The hotel had 1 working elevator for 16 floors of guests. The elevator closed on us before we could get in. Had to wait another 10 minutes for the elevator to work its way down. The room was fine other than the a/c not working. Engineering came at 11:30 pm to fix the a/c. Said it’s all fixed except it wasn’t. We were on the 7th floor which is no big deal except the phone in the room didn’t work. So we just dealt with the heat. The mattress was too soft. I sweated so bad the sheets were soaking. If you want a restful sleep it won’t happen here. People were talking all night in the hall of our floor. We didn’t sleep at all.

Best view of downtown Chicago I had the absolute best time at this hotel. Although it was only for 2 nights, I would definitely stay again. Beautiful hotel, inside and out. They allowed me to check in early so that way I would not have to wander around town with my luggage
