Downtown Seattle, Washington: Art, Architecture, and Famous Coffee in Coastal Urban Center

Street performances, flowers, and fresh-caught fish find a common home at Seattle’s Pike Place Market. Founded in 1907, it's where both sightseers and locals shop. Drop into the Fish Market to watch the staff tossing salmon, halibut, and cod—a famous tradition. There are plenty of nonperishable goods as well, including jewelry and other crafts. And you might want to take a picture in front of the market’s iconic sign, which now rivals the Space Needle as the city’s most recognizable symbol.

The original Starbucks coffeehouse has operated out of Pike Place since the 1970s. You can stop here for a pick-me-up before taking the half-mile walk to Seattle's Central Library. Whether you love books or architecture or both, this futuristic-looking library is worth a visit. The 11-story glass-and-steel structure consists almost entirely of diamond-shaped windows arranged to look like a geometric net. The otherworldly interior is a playground for book lovers. Be sure to check out the library’s “living room” in the morning, when sunlight creates a kaleidoscopic shadow on the floor.

Perfect for West Seattle This is an older, two-story motel style property that was remodeled a few years ago and has a certain charm. The property is well maintained and cared for. Very friendly and professional front desk staff (a very pleasant young woman) that after a long day of negotiating airports and travel was a welcome relief to encounter upon check-in, as was the older woman who checked me out. I encountered a very friendly and helpful housekeeper in the hallway upon my departure who even offered to assist me with luggage down the stairs as there is no elevator (I am a senior person and stairs are a bit challenging for me). I was very impressed by the cleanliness of my room (222), the bed and bath linens in particular, but also the hardwood floor, refrigerator and Keurig coffee maker. Well done! I think this is the smallest room in the Inn ((a single queen bed)) that had older fixtures in the quite small bathroom, but all were very clean and functioned well, and met all of my needs very well. There was a very comfortable sitting chair and the expandable work desk and chair were just fine (though the desk was a tad worn 'round the edges). There are restaurants / markets nearby and within walking distance. There are two smallish parking lots, but also adjacent street parking. If you have business or vacation plans in or near West Seattle, this is a great location that is hundreds of dollars less than the mega properties in downtown. I would stay there again.

Good location Good location for visiting family in West Seattle as there are no chain hotels nearby. This is an older renovated hotel with small rooms but is incredibly cute and clean. I would stay here again.

Sleepless in West Seattle Although location to Alaska Junction activities is good, the hotel is on a busy street with a bus stop in front of it. Bring earplugs as the buses during the night can be quite loud. In addition, the mattress in our room was in much need of replacement.
