Rockbridge County, Virginia: Stunning Rock Formations in Shenandoah Valley
An ancient limestone bridge serves as the centerpiece of the aptly named Rockbridge County, which is tucked in Shenandoah Valley amid breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Natural Bridge—which formed from the remnants of a cavern that collapsed some 15 million years ago—is more than 20 stories tall and 90 feet long. The land it stands on is said to have once belonged to Thomas Jefferson.
The area surrounding the bridge is studded with old growth forests that make for picturesque hikes.
Along Cedar Creek Trail, you might spot colorful wildflowers and exotic butterflies. More than 300 feet below ground, the Natural Bridge Caverns remained undiscovered until the late 1970s. Today, you can explore the caverns to see massive stalagmites and a dome that formed thousands of years ago.
