Hotel at a Glance: Hotel Alyeska
“Alyeska” is an Aleut word that means “great land,” and the four-star Hotel Alyeska doesn’t use the term lightly. This chateau-style resort is at the gateway to Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula, an area famous for its mountains, glaciers, and wild coastal scenery. You can see the peninsula’s breathtaking expanses during a ride on the resort’s aerial tram, which leads to the top of Mount Alyeska. It opens May 19. Until then, guests can admire the mountain while relaxing in the heated indoor pool, where massive windows look out on the mountain’s north face.
- Take a hike: Scenic trails begin right at the resort and wind through the northernmost temperate rainforest on the continent including Winner Creek Trail, Virgin Falls, and Trail of Blue Ice.
- Accommodations: Deluxe rooms feature partial mountain views and free WiFi.
- Dining options: Aurora Bar & Grill is just one of several onsite restaurants, also including sushi spot Sakura, which opens May 26. In the Upper Tram Terminal, the AAA Four Diamond–rated Seven Glaciers open May 20, and the remodeled Bore Tide Deli opens May 25.
- The Spa at Alyeska: Head here for an aromatherapy massage, lemongrass-and-bamboo scrub, or Arctic mud facial.
- Learn about local wildlife at the nearby Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center
- Get your heart pumping with yoga and fitness classes, or zip around on complimentary cruiser bikes.
- Recent awards: The resort won a Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Award and a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence in 2015.
