Midtown East Manhattan: Iconic Sights and Shops Along Fifth Avenue

Midtown East refers to a 17-block stretch of central Manhattan between Fifth Avenue and the East River. The area is known for some of New York’s most famous landmarks, including Rockefeller Center, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, and Grand Central Terminal (one of the world’s most-visited tourist attractions). Though in recent years Grand Central has filled with upscale restaurants and shops, it still serves as a major transportation hub with subway lines, Metro trains, and ziplines heading all over the city.

A stroll down Fifth Avenue is a world-renowned shopping experience: the street is filled with luxury boutiques and flagship department stores, including the original Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman. For a little tranquility in the middle of the city, follow Fifth up to the southeast corner of Central Park. Just a few feet off the street is the Pond, which is spanned by a stone bridge. A little farther north, you’ll find the heart of Central Park Zoo.

Great NYC Hotel We enjoyed our stay at The Hotel at 5th Ave. It was very clean and well appointed. While unassuming on the exterior, the interior was beautiful! Staff from front desk to housekeeping were friendly and helpful. Very quiet inside also. Conveniently located close to MSG, Times Square, 5th Ave, Madison Ave, Broadway. Reasonably priced. Definitely recommend!

Don't waste your time at this 'boutique' hotel We booked this hotel from a recommendation of The Guestbook, as we had accumulated credits through the website to use towards this booking. I reserved directly on their website, with a 'pay at hotel' rate, mostly because I use a Canadian credit card while travelling and like to have control over the charges. I expected to provide the credit card to pay for the reservation upon our arrival. On our way to the airport on the day of our arrival, I received an email at 4:26am that our reservation was being cancelled due to non-payment. In a panic, I made another reservation on their website with the card I intended to pay at the hotel with. When we arrived at the front desk of the hotel, all winded, worried, frustrated and sweaty, we tried to explain our concern to the front desk clerk. He cut me off several times, and then very rudely explained that it was a 'boutique hotel' and he could just cancel the new reservation if we didn't like their policies. When I tried to explain that their policy was not stated on the website, and that it clearly says 'pay at hotel' he persisted with the threat to cancel our room. He then tried to play the nice guy and honored the second reservation, took my payment, and even offered to 'upgrade' our room. He asked if we wanted the front or rear of the hotel, we asked which was quieter, and he indicated the front. We went off to our room, 1116. The lobby was stylish, well situated, and the location of the hotel was right in the middle of Koreatown, with easy access to restaurants, sights, and the subway line. Upon entering our room, however, we were very disappointed. The room was the size of most bathrooms at other similarly priced hotels, with very little room to navigate around the bed. The washroom had a micro-bathtub, only about 3' wide, with a toilet and small vanity squeezed into the same room. There wasn't even enough room on the vanity to place our toiletries during our stay. The bed and bedding were comfortable and clean, however, that's where the cleanliness ended. The wallpaper was peeling in several places, there was black dust on the baseboards. The ceiling in the washroom was also peeling due to the lack of air circulation in such a small space. There was a safe and closet, although, they only provided 6 hangers. The room was anything but quiet. We were subject to loud music until 3am on the first night, right outside our window. Other guests would allow doors to slam. The cleaning staff would still knock on our door, even with the 'do not disturb' sign hanging outside. There was no mini-fridge, and the ice maker was on the 4th floor. The only toiletries provided in the washroom were shampoo and lotion. The amenities were anything but 'boutique'. The other concern we had during our stay was at the hotel's rooftop bar, K32. We went up twice during our stay, and only on the second time we realized the scam that was happening up there. Pay attention to your bill! We ordered 2 glasses of wine at $12/each and were provided with a $36 bill. We didn't receive the bill first, the server simply took my husband's credit card and rang it through. When we questioned the price upon receiving the signature slip, the server indicated it included tax and tip - he was giving himself a 20% tip. We asked for it to be reversed and left him no tip, simply because of the audacity of this assumption. We would typically leave 15% for good service, 20% with bottle service. We are also very sure he did the same thing the first night we were there, although, we didn't receive a bill then either, so have no way of confirming. All in all, we will not be staying at this hotel again.

Awesome service Phenomenal service highly recommend! We walked in without a reservation. We came into town due to a family medical emergency and the staff was incredibly kind and patient in working with us and helping us find a situation that met our family’s needs at a hard time. We are truly grateful!
