St. Louis, Missouri: Urban Park Space and Brewery Tours in the Gateway City

The first thing you notice about the St. Louis Gateway Arch is its height: at 630 feet, it’s the tallest manmade monument in the United States, and it dwarfs the other buildings of the St. Louis skyline. Less obvious is the fact that the Arch is exactly as tall as it is wide, stretching out along the banks of the Mississippi River. You can take a ride to the summit for a bird’s-eye view of the city’s skyline and riverboats riding the Mississippi. Make sure you get to the Arch before 10 a.m.; after that, the lines start to get long, and tickets sometimes sell out in the afternoon. A few miles down the river, you’ll find the headquarters of brewing giant Anheuser-Busch, which began producing there in 1852. On a tour through the red-brick brewery, you can sample beers and visit the stables where the company keeps its iconic clydesdale horses.

Nearby Forest Park’s more than 1,200 acres of green space are also worth a visit. Contained in this space is the Saint Louis Zoo, which corrals hundreds of species in several different habitats; it’s frequently cited as one of the best zoos in the country, and entrance is free.

Closed!! Booked this 10 months ago via Expedia. Arrived this evening to find place completely closed down, looking derelict and abandoned. We were with some friends who had also booked same hotel but with another agent. Not the best sight to see after a whole days travelling. Called Expedia who said they had received no update from hotel about being closed. A guy walked past who said the hotel has been closed for months and was being refurbished!

How rude Booked after seeing the beautiful photos of elegance and coziness and great location ( 3 1/2 months in advance receiving a confirmation). After 7 hours on the road and just four hours prior to our weekend events we entered an empty torn apart lobby filled with construction workers, wires hanging down, dust everywhere. Looked like a bomb site. Hotel was closed for remodeling. I never received a notice and there was no one to contact by phone for help.

A Fair Review.. We stayed here for one night and chose the hotel by weighing up a nice middle ground between price and location. This hotel seems to attract some negative reviews although I partly think that perhaps this is down to a slightly exaggerated 4 star rating and a misunderstanding the history of this hotel. Firstly, many websites seem to give this hotel a 4 star rating. This immediately affords a level of expectation amongst guests which in fairness, the hotel doesn't quite stand up to. I think if it lowered its rating to 3 or 3.5 stars, then the guest expectation would be about right. Secondly, it seems that a lot of guests don't quite realise that the hotel has tried to keep to the design as it was in the 1920's and 1930s when the hotel, situated on a major through route for Route 66. would have been considered as a luxury hotel and stopover. If you're looking for a more modern 21st Century style decor, then you just wont get it here. What you will get, is the quaint and almost lost ambience of 1930s America (not that I was around to know personally). It's true, the rooms and hotel areas are are a little dark, a little dated - but it would seem that is exactly the intent here. Either you love it for its historical significance and trueness to the original design, or you hate it because you chose this hotel without doing some research and going in with a 21st Century image of a hotel in mind! The room had everything we needed, although I would say that perhaps some better lighting could be employed (the room was quite dark even in the daytime and with all the lighting fixtures turned on). Staff were friendly and helpful, and there is limited parking on the property although you do need to pay for this (although it wasnt too much). Breakfast was included although I would say that it was slightly underwhelming, again, I think this is where the hotel would do better to go with a 3 star label because. although it wasnt bad, it certainly wasn't what I'd expect for a "4 star" hotel. Expect toast and spreads, pastries and cereals and a few fresh fruit options, Orange Juice and tea and coffee - but not much else. The general location was fine, its about a 15min walk to the Gateway Arch and there are some restaurants and bars nearby (try out Caleco's Bar & Grill nearby for some great Italian/American cuisine in a great setting). I'd say the area is generally safe but I would be careful walking back at night, stick to the main arteries or get a taxi as it can be very quiet and there did seem to be some questionable folk/activity after closing time (although we didn't experience any problems ourselves). As to whether I'd stay here again, In all honesty, I probably wouldn't - but that's not because it was a bad experience/bad stay, or bad hotel - it's perhaps just because I'd rather try somewhere else in St Louis. Would I recommend staying here; well I wouldn't say "don't" stay here, I'd just say "expect 3 star, not 4 star, and expect a taste of 1930s St Louis and you'll be fine and if that's what you're after, or want to get a feel for what the elite and travellers on Route 66 would have experienced, then this hotel is perfect.
