Cobleskill, New York: Quiet College Town in Catskill Mountain Foothills

It’s hard to separate Cobleskill from its larger-than-life setting—the quiet town is sandwiched between the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains and roughly equidistant from Albany and Cooperstown.

The rolling countryside of upstate New York is nicknamed the Leatherstocking Area, a reference to the leather legwear donned by pioneers described by James Fenimore Cooper in The Leatherstocking Tales (you might be familiar with The Last of the Mohicans, which is part of this series). Today, tourists visit this countryside to hike and mountain bike along its wooded mountain trails, see rushing streams, and explore prehistoric limestone caves at Howe Caverns.

Cobleskill itself is a relatively peaceful college town. It’s home to the State University of New York Cobleskill and dotted with farmhouses and centuries-old Victorian architecture in the historic district. You’ll also find several easy-to-reach museums in the neighboring towns: The Iroquois Indian Museum chronicles the local tribe’s arts and customs, whereas The Old Stone Fort Museum pays homage to New York’s colonial heritage. It’s worth it to venture about 30 miles west to Cooperstown’s National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. It has more than 30,000 collectible items, including a baseball from the first World Series and Babe Ruth’s legendary bat.

The hotel is in a beautiful setting in the mountains & is close to many tourist activities. There were a few issues: 1. the shower curtain was very old, stained & yellow. & 2. the refrigerator had mold on the gasket on the inside of the door. They changed out the frig & shower curtain. Other than that, it was okay. I would stay there again.

Blessing in disguse.. I want to first start by thanking Nicole from the inn for handling things in the most unprofessional rude manner as possible, including calling the police on our group when we questioned our non existent reservation that had been confirmed and paid in full already with them. at the time we were with good reason upset and frazzled about what we were gonna do or where we were gonna stay but after regrouping ended up in another town at a 1,000x better establishment which was run by hospitality professionals unlike herself. Nicole and the maintence staff at this hotel, were rude from the moment we walked in the door, the establishment and employees are to be desired. Rather than helping rectify the issue, she wiped her hands of us immediately and even walked away slamming the office door in our faces. When we tried to use the lobby computer to make other arrangements that she was not going to correct the situation or help with, she hid in the office and called the local police on us to ask us to leave! Other guests while we were in the lobby that had checked in came back within 5 mins of seeing their rooms, to inform Nicole that the rooms had not even been cleaned that she had just put them in, and even showed her pictures of the dirty sheets! For being the only one on the premises - she had zero answers or ambition to help anyone staying at the run down establishment! The entire building and employee crew need to be completely overhauled and updated! Do yourself a favor and choose another establishment within the town or neighboring towns!

Don’t stay here The place is dirty, old and rundown. The shower in our room was broken. Carpet was filthy. There was a hole in the wall under the sink. There was a leftover toilet paper wrapper under the sink that was not swept. When we walked out of the back doors it smelled like pot. The only positive is that the staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating.
