Luxurious Resort Tucked in the Blue Ridge Mountains

In 1948, Claus Moberg purchased a 30-acre apple orchard in North Carolina’s High Country, where he built a summer cottage for his family. In 2004, the estate was transformed into The Inn at Crestwood, where guests can admire the property’s mountain views and be close to the charming towns of Boone and Blowing Rock, as well as the Blue Ridge Parkway. The original design is still evident throughout the spacious inn, which displays Moberg’s original artwork and floor plans.

Elegant furnishings and forest views define The Inn at Crestwood’s guest rooms. Resort amenities include hot breakfast, an indoor pool, a dry sauna, and a steam room. You can also enjoy a refreshing facial or massage at the spa (extra fees).

Head to The Table Restaurant (closed Monday and Tuesday) for farm-to-table eats such as bacon-wrapped pork medallions or shrimp and grits. You can also grab a pint of locally brewed beer at the onsite Dawg Star Bar.

Blowing Rock, North Carolina: Scenic Hikes and Skiing in the Blue Ridge Mountains

Blowing Rock is located on the edge of the 500,000-acre Pisgah National Forest in northeastern North Carolina. The town, named for a rock formation, is a home base for outdoor recreation in the Blue Ridge Mountains—especially hiking, whitewater rafting, fly-fishing, and horseback riding. Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, a historic estate on 3,600 acres of forests and meadows, has 26 miles of carriage roads designated for walking and horseback riding. To see the sights from a car, head to the Blue Ridge Parkway, a scenic motorway through the Appalachians.

Aside from the parkway, there’s plenty to do year-round here, from whitewater rafting and fly-fishing in the summer to cross-country and downhill skiing in the cooler months. About 25 miles northwest of Blowing Rock is Beech Mountain Resort, a popular ski spot with 15 trails for all skill levels. According to Fodor’s, it’s the highest ski area in the eastern United States, at 5,500 feet above sea level.

Back in town, Blowing Rock’s Main Street is lined with antique shops, boutiques, and upscale bistros. Bargain hunters might want to stop by Tanger Outlets, home to Banana Republic, Loft, and Polo Ralph Lauren outlet stores.

Good - pretty location. Room seemed very clean. Really tiny TV with really crummy speakers. Room also needed more lighting and we would've appreciated a mini fridge. Pool at the spa did not look very clean. However, we only needed a place to shower and stay one night, and we did not spend much time in the room so it met our needs quite well. The free breakfast was a pleasant surprise!
