Reading, Pennsylvania: Arts and Culture in Historic City

Though it’s Pennsylvania’s fifth-largest city, Reading ranks near the top when it comes to churning out famous residents. These include Pulitzer Prize–winning poet Wallace Stevens, world-famous composer John Philip Sousa, and pioneer Daniel Boone (whose homestead is actually in Birdsboro, but close enough). The city is also the birthplace of the Reading Railroad, which no longer operates trains but still has a spot on Monopoly boards. Visit the Reading Public Museum for a deeper look at the city, as well as kid-friendly exhibits and even a planetarium.

Climb the 87 steps to the top of the Reading Pagoda on Mount Penn for a bird’s-eye view of the whole area. For a bit of military history, the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum offers a unique collection of classic airliners and warbirds, including the prize of the collection—a P2V-7 Neptune anti-submarine patrol bomber. Reading is also a sports town; in the summer, you can spend a few innings with the Reading Fightin’ Phils, four-time champions of the Eastern League.
