Hotel at a Glance: The Mountain Club on Loon
Perched on a scenic bluff in White Mountain National Forest, The Mountain Club on Loon overlooks forested slopes and the rushing waters of the Pemigewasset River. Awards and accolades: Thanks in part to a $9 million renovation, the Mountain Club earned TripAdvisor's Travelers' Choice Award. Fodor's commended its "clean and modern update," which included the addition of a large stone fireplace.
Spacious rooms: Each room features wireless Internet access, cable TV, and a coffee maker
Black Diamond Pub: Casual on-site dining with locally sourced burgers, steaks, and craft beers
Lincoln, New Hampshire: New England Town amid White Mountains and Forests
Formerly a mill town, Lincoln is now home to a modest collection of roadside diners and antique shops. But many visitors are drawn to Lincoln for its proximity to the White Mountains. Loon Mountain, the closest peak, looms 3,050 feet above town. The mountain is best known for its ski slopes—there are 61 trails on 370 skiable acres.
Just northeast of town lies Franconia Notch State Park, home to the former site of the Old Man of the Mountain, a rock formation that remains New Hampshire’s state emblem despite having collapsed in 2003. Photogenic nature scenes can be found at almost every turn here. Birch trees jut out of cliffs and thick mats of moss sprawl over giant boulders.

Nice Summer Get-Away Roomy accommodations, friendly & helpful staff, lots to do at the resort in the summer (disc golf, gondola rides, cave hiking, obstacle courses, swimming pools, to name a few), tasty food,, and best massage of my life (Josiah should teach therapists in training how to provide the best message… Just wow!).

No veteran or person with a disability should be treated this way. Watch out for the GM/ President of this hotel I am a 20-year Army veteran, 100% disabled, and travel with a fully trained and task-specific service dog. I was attending a Warfighter Retreat hosted by Veterans Affairs in Lincoln, NH. After the first day of activities, our group checked into The Mountain Club on Loon.
As I was entering the elevator with my service dog, I was approached by a man who identified himself as Jeffery O. McIver, the President and General Manager. Without introducing himself or asking any clarifying questions, he aggressively stated, “You can’t have a dog here!” I calmly explained that I am a disabled veteran and this is my service dog.
He replied, “That’s not a service dog. You’re not disabled.”
I again stated that I am, in fact, 100% disabled, and that my dog is a trained service animal who performs essential medical tasks for me. He continued to question me in an accusatory tone and insisted my dog was not providing any services. I briefly outlined what my dog does to assist me. He then stated he was going to contact the ADA because, in his words, “you are not disabled and this is not a service dog.”
When I asked for his business card, he gave it willingly and said he’d be glad to speak to anyone. I then asked if he was aware that several other veterans in our group also have service dogs. He said, “Oh, well, we made an exception for them because they have disabilities.”
This was not only humiliating, it was discriminatory, deeply offensive, and an outright violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Mr. McIver’s words and behavior were inappropriate, harassing, and showed a complete lack of training in how to interact with disabled guests—particularly veterans who already navigate enough stigma.
