Historical Art-Deco Hotel near Madison Square Garden
Since the New Yorker Hotel opened its doors in 1929, its guest list has been a veritable who's who of Manhattan—Joe DiMaggio, Muhammad Ali, John F. Kennedy, and Joan Crawford have all stayed here. The hotel’s swanky art-deco decor is right at home around Midtown's iconic 34th Street, which is just steps from Times Square, the Empire State Building, and Madison Square Garden.
From high up in the view rooms, you can see the Hudson River or the Empire State Building. All the guest rooms have an old-fashioned art-deco theme amid modern amenities such as flat-screen TVs and wireless Internet.
The hotel has two onsite restaurants, each with its own distinct personality. At Cooper's Tavern, you can enjoy upscale cuisine, from pan-seared sea scallops to the Skyscraper burger—stacked so high it has to be held together by a steak knife. Tick Tock Diner, on the other hand, is more retro. Its motto is "Eat Heavy," and there are plenty of ways to do so. It's open 24 hours and serves breakfast all day; choose from more than 10 types of omelets and apple-walnut pancakes.
Times Square, New York City: Flashy Neon Lights and World-Class Art Centers
The New Yorker Hotel is just a 10-minute walk from Times Square, which is located at the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue in Manhattan’s Midtown West neighborhood. The famous address—known as the “crossroads of the world”—is home to hypnotizing billboards, giant wraparound news tickers, and the neon lights of Broadway. Beyond the glitz and gimmicks, there is a handful of world-class cultural institutions, ranging from award-winning museums to Michelin-rated restaurants. A collection of historical buildings in the Square include the Paramount Building and One Times Square—the site of the New Year's Eve ball drop.
Less than a mile from the hotel, the Central Park, designed by legendary architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Head here to walk or pedal past the rolling meadows and bridges that span lakes adorned with lily pads. The Central Park Zoo is also contained here; don’t miss the daily sea lion feeding or the recently opened snow leopard habitat.
