Burnsville, North Carolina: Quaint Small Town on the Edge of Pisgah National Forest

Burnsville’s quaint town center sits in the shadow of Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. The 500,000-acre Pisgah National Forest lies just beyond the town’s borders. Go hiking, biking, or horseback riding through the hardwood and old-growth forests. Along the way you might spot the Pink Beds—an expanses blanketed with pink wildflowers. Rivers, lakes, and ponds can be found throughout the forest, offering great spots for fishing and swimming. The most popular attraction, though, is probably Looking Glass Rock. Climb to the top (almost 4,000 feet) for an eye-popping view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Back in Burnsville, you can get a taste of the area’s history at the John Wesley McElroy House, a museum and historic home listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Within its Georgian-style rooms, you’ll find period furniture, old paintings, and Native American artifacts from the Paleolithic period.
