Pawleys Island, SC: Where Southern Charm Meets Timeless Coastal Serenity

Nestled along South Carolina’s Lowcountry coast, Pawleys Island is a tranquil escape steeped in history and natural beauty. Established in the early 18th century as a seasonal retreat for rice planters, this slender barrier island has retained its unhurried charm, with weathered cedar-shake cottages and moss-draped oaks standing as quiet witnesses to centuries of coastal life. Unlike the bustling resorts of nearby Myrtle Beach, Pawleys Island moves to the rhythm of the tides, offering sweeping marsh vistas, pristine beaches, and a sense of seclusion that feels worlds away. Its iconic rope hammocks—handcrafted here since the 1930s—symbolize the island’s dedication to slow living and artisanal tradition.

Beyond its postcard-perfect shores, Pawleys Island is a gateway to the rich ecological and cultural tapestry of the Lowcountry. The saltwater creeks and estuaries teem with herons, dolphins, and oysters, while the historic Georgetown district—just a short drive away—boasts antebellum architecture and Gullah-Geechee heritage. Whether kayaking through the marsh at dawn, casting a line off the historic Pawleys Island Pier, or simply rocking on a porch swing to the sound of rustling palmetto fronds, visitors here become part of a legacy that values simplicity, authenticity, and the enduring magic of the Carolina coast.

AC unit terrible. Told front desk on second day. Failed to enter work order. I meet someone from hotel staff at room This review is average only because our AC unit in room 229 was terrible. It worked hard the first evening to get to 74F. At 12:00 we woke to a temp of 84F. The unit located under cabinet in bathroom was so hot I feared a fire. So turned off as much as I could and we slept with patio door full open. Luckily it was 64F out. But even when AC should have been off it blew air which was often warn. How with daytime temps of 74 does the room reach 82F with all controls off to AC?

An Outcast of the Islands We reserved our three day stay a month or two ahead. We were rewarded with a room overlooking the pool, a very narrow peak a boo ocean view. We opened the drapes to a vast view of the pool deck bar which was crowded with folks drinking it up. Thankfully, it started to rain and kept raining on and off our entire stay. Which cleared the pool deck. But that’s not the worst. Cheerful waitresses in their restaurant, always had a ready “I’ll look into it” with each modest request (could you maybe turn down the awful music, which was unrelenting). No bananas or raisins for your oatmeal or cereal - no oatmeal or cereal either for that matter. Don’t try to get your own coffee, that’s apparently not allowed either at the coffee shop. We payed a king’s ransom for our three days and I see the rack rate on the hotel website sites dropped with the barometer to $120 a night. Thank you Litchfield Inn for a memorial trip. What would I change or improve? Let’s see… Skip it is my advice, stay in wonderful Charleston or Georgetown, both of which have wonderful restaurants and shops. And hotels! You can go to the beach somewhere more inviting as well. Lots of dead jellyfish drifted ashore during our stay, quite different from our California jellies. That was interesting!

Pretty awful We stayed in the tower, which we have stayed in before. We were told the rooms had been renovated. I would say that is barely true. The room was tiny. There were only 2 of us and we could barely move around in there. The beds were not comfortable, the sheets were like sandpaper. The dresser smelled horrible so we couldn't even put our clothes in there. The headboards were peeling. The toilet was so close to the ground that it was hard to get up from it. The elevator was extremely rickety. Every time we got on it, I was worried we would get stuck. I repeatedly asked for more towels - we never got them. I had to empty our own trash. The absolute only positive about Litchfield is the proximity to the beach and the restaurant. This is coming from someone who has been staying there since the 1970's. On Wednesday, there was a singer at the pool. This ruined our day at the beach. The music was so loud. We just wanted to relax on the beach but couldn't even do that. Who thought it was a good idea to have loud music on a weekday? This would have been more appropriate on a weekend night. Overall, a very uncomfortable stay. Would never recommend and will never come back.

Great Spot, NOT Not really sure where to start. When making this reservation, I looked through the online pictures on their website. The rooms are not accurately depicted. That is the most professional way I can express myself. It is a run down property. We sat on sofas on their patio by the pool looking out over the ocean and noticed that whoever was there before us left ketchup bottles and empty cocktail glasses on the table. They were not picked up by staff until the next day! We saw the guy who cleans the pool gather them up the following morning. That is just one example. The room had a lazy boy chair, ( yeah, that's right!) inthe room. handle on slider to patio broken. bathroom cabinets broken. the shower is so bad, cant even tell you . When you get out of the shower, you feel dirt sticking to your feet right away. Could not use drawers in the dresser because the drawers were dirty and ended up keeping all of our belongings in our suitcases. Oh yeah, how about the motel employees drinking in excess at the pool bar at night, that was a nice touch. I could go on and on. They are the only game in town, and they know it so they literally invest nothing back into the business. We had to kick out door open and closed a few times just to get in and out. Management, if you are reading this, spend some time in room 729!!!! On a positive, there is a restaurant there called Tide to Table. Very good, top notch service, quality food and clean environment. We can not figure out why they are at that hotel. Highly recommend! As far as the hotel/motel, buyer beware, there are other towns not so far away that are more worth the money than The Oceanfront at Litchfield. Besides, it may be only a matter of time before the CDC the local Government comes in and condemns this property!

Very disappointing. One of our favorite places has gone downhill. Let me start by saying this has been a family favorite place to stay for us for almost 30 years. We visited during very popular beach destination time - Easter week 2025. 2 of the main pools - Bridgewater and Summerhouse including beach access via these pool areas were closed and in major disrepair. We were blatantly lied to about the reopening of these pools by 3 different staff members. There was a mix up during checking in. The restaurant Coastal Dish was closed for all meals but breakfast…. And breakfast was a hit or miss. One of the elevators in the Bridgewater building was broken. We were contacted multiple times asking us to come to a “non timeshare” sales pitch …. After declining the first time. Very sad … we loved this place but will be making memories elsewhere in the future
