One of these estates is now home to the Caledonia Golf & Fish Club. Named one of America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses by Golf Digest in 2008, the grounds are dotted with centuries-old live oaks and feature an antebellum-style clubhouse. The island’s year-round temperate climate makes golfing a popular pastime no matter when you visit.
At the Hammock Shops Village, you can check out an Audubon store, a candle maker’s shop, and more than 20 other specialty boutiques and restaurants. Built in 1938, the village is surrounded by gardens teeming with moss-draped oaks and azaleas. And, true to its name, the Hammock Shops Village provides hammocks and rockers for pausing and slipping into siestas.
